bobby, bobby, what I’m saying to YOU, hooliganism exists throughout europe but you’re
not going to get head decapitated cause you wear Croat or Bosnian shirt. one or two flares in italy man?
why don’t you look news reel what was happening after the match, it was more like a bad night in Vietnam.

I’m not trying to convince anyone serbs are evil :))) they are all probably caring and kind husbands, wives, fathers and mothers but from my personal encounters and experience I’m saying they are too very conflicting,
blood thirsty, war hungry and react in extreme violence.

I’m sorry but you all sound like colege frat boys with their own ideologies about the world who seen
and know what’s happening here from short newsreel on CNN.

“I’m sorry but you all sound like colege frat boys with their own ideologies about the world who seen
and know what’s happening here from short newsreel on CNN.”

A: you don’t know what a college frat boy is.
B: some of us don’t have CNN in our countries you ignorant racist.
C: the fact you’re still piling up all Serbs like they’re animals is disrespectful to the idea of equality and peace and you’re just being another Nationalist who likes to put all people in the same pot of influence. Just because my fucking country is swarmed with Christians, doesn’t mean I’m Christian too! Individuality is above the MASS. Learn that and then come back to flame every single Serbian individual. Cypriots were slaughtered too back then, Somalians as well decades later, so the survivors must keep on the hatred to their oppressors instead of trying to find what’s underneath?

Bobby Wise

“As for the difference between his politics and his films, Bobby, I’m not so sure that the two can be very easily divorced in such a context (in one of pretty horrific violence in which the filmmaker in question is caught in the middle). I’m not sure how you can be apparently so interesting in Serbian film (haven’t you posted elsewhere to say that you’ve lived in the region), without being concerned with those larger issues. I generally feel that filmmakers have larger social and political responsibilities but I’m not exactly sure what that would mean in this context.”

I am concerned with the larger issues, but currently my concern centers on fighting the stacking of blame in one corner, especially when that stacking is used to perpetuate myths, to “Balkanize” a people and a whole region. Do filmmakers have larger social and political responsibilities? Now we come to a huge debate. I think filmmakers should speak about the world they live in but I’m a little wary about using them as political vehicles.

“Dragojevic (article quoted from seems to have gotten his name wrong) is another filmmaker from that region I like quite a bit (especially Pretty Village, Pretty Flame and Rane which I find to be brilliant although I haven’t seen either in years). Is he also considered a Serbian nationalist?”

I think any Serbian film made about the war is considered Serbian nationalism. Dragojevic’s film certainly wasn’t read as fair and balanced by people. I’d like to put the word “nationalism” to rest. It’s a generic adjective that has been coded evil and used to attack. Nationalism in and of itself isn’t inherently a bad thing. People can do bad things in its name. In some countries nationalism is probably a good thing, used as a tool to uplift a people. In the context of the former Yugoslavia, it’s just one more word used to paint people in broad, simplified strokes: nationalist, refugee, war criminal, victim, Muslim, Orthodox, Catholic. No one ever talks about people in the region as living, breathing, well-rounded human beings. This is part of the rhetoric that keeps people down in the region and satiates Western needs.

“bobby, bobby, what I’m saying to YOU, hooliganism exists throughout europe but you’re
not going to get head decapitated cause you wear Croat or Bosnian shirt. one or two flares in italy man?
why don’t you look news reel what was happening after the match, it was more like a bad night in Vietnam.”

Sorry, but the only reports I’ve read don’t mention anything about heads rolling. Please feel free to enlighten me by sending me links to articles or clips detailing people being slaughtered in the streets. Surely they exist. It’s not like the mainstream press is on Serbia’s side.

“I’m not trying to convince anyone serbs are evil :))) they are all probably caring and kind husbands, wives, fathers and mothers but from my personal encounters and experience I’m saying they are too very conflicting,
blood thirsty, war hungry and react in extreme violence.”

My experience is the opposite. So do we paint them in broad strokes one way or another? All human beings have this conflict brewing within them.

“I’m sorry but you all sound like colege frat boys with their own ideologies about the world who seen
and know what’s happening here from short newsreel on CNN.”

You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about, just as you accuse us. College frat boys don’t have ideologies, they have parties!

micky ward

yes I do, you must be kind of guy like Bluto in Animal House :))))
yes, I am a Nationalist and will be always, serbs never wanted to accept equality and peace.
infact, they protested it massively when Americans made us all to reach Daytona agreement
to cease all fire.

Pedja

Bullshit, Micky!
Serbs D. Makavejev, A. Petrović, Ž. Pavlović, Mića Popović, Željko Žilnik were “enemies of the state” back in the 70’s and they went – US, France, Slovenia, self-isolation and painting studio, Germany, etc . Facts! What’s happening after the Civil War is another story, but Kusturica did not. Look at him, with presidents… and Matija again. Spreading the false picture of Serbia and Serbians, just like those hooligans. Arghhhhhhhhhh.

LIAM ALLEN

normally the abstrusely theoretical nature of discussions such as this is the alienating factor, but not this time! the manufactured anger is what i happen to find most infuriating.while the political subtext or even the overtly political textual surface of a film might be of interest to some, it is the formal qualities displayed by a filmmaker that should compel interest ,not whether their ideological convictions conform with ones own!

micky ward

bobby, heads roling? did I say there was a war ensuing?, serbians attacked the bus of their own players, setting it partly on fire wanting to get vladimir stojkovic. hooligans get in fist fights but nowhere in europe does city goes in smoke cause of supporters. NOWHERE, serbia has the most posibly worst supporters, can you fucking understand that? try!
you’re talking about things you don’t know jack shit about. got talk about american football or baseball.

bullshit? last I remember serbia had to be bombed by nato to cease fire. people were protesting
even in these times. too bad Bill Kilgore couldn’t come with his 1/9 Air Cavalry playing Richard Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries.

I’ve been in Red Star stadium, my friend. For a champions league match no less. So as I’ve said before, try to sell your shit to someone who’s ignorant of the matter. Maybe someone who only knows life through television, as you mentioned.

micky ward

you are the ignorant my friend. which supporters are the worst in europe?
I’ll tell you so you don’t have to research it. serbia first the undisputable winner, Croatia second, Bosnia-they have good and bad moments. everyone else is more or less of acceptable behaviour.
what game was that? please tell me
interesting you decided to go to see Red Star, football and stadiums here are of very poor quality.
you’re full of shit.

Pedja

Micky, it is possible that in near future Serbs starts some new civil war! So, if you like, be my guest, we are going to arrange your pleasant staying here, because it’s very interesting experience to feel state of siege, believe me!

Bobby Wise

I went to that match 6 or 7 years ago. It was a Dutch team, if my memory serves me. I wasn’t so knowledgeable about European football then.

But let’s get back to what matters here. What’s your point about Serbs being the worst football fans?

micky ward

attention all of you for human equality and clueless football fans.
Fifa is considering these days and most likely to ban serbian national team from all competitions
due to it’s ,for some normal in European way, hooliganism. :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
could this often violent behaviour be a coincidence with serbs and their abominable history? perhaps, but
I don’t believe it. they have deep seeded roots in violence.

pedja why would I come there, it stinks. it stinks till here. I’m only there to support Croatian or Bosnian
national team if it happens.

Bobby Wise

It’s not Serbia that stinks. You’re looking in the wrong direction. I told you before to wake up and smell what you’re shoveling.

micky ward

actually that was you along with them being full of shit about being on Champions League match,
only two Dutch teams could of been Ajax or PSV, both top flight clubs but you can’t remember.
why don’t you refresh my memory and tell me where the stadium is exactly, which part of grandstands
is for away supporters and which entrance do you use?

I don’t understand why people take so personal my experiences and opinion about serbs
are you a serb lovers? do you have serbian roots? do you suck serbian dicks?

Ari

I can see that this is a topic that’s difficult to have reasoned discourse but, Micky, you really aren’t doing your argument a service by completely dehumanizing the other side. Makes me wonder about the possibility of peace. At least I can say now that I better understand why Kusturica is controversial figure in the region. Besides, if you are essentially saying that the Serbs are violent animals, aren’t you all (Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs) essentially the same people in any case?

peace? fuck peace! I should of had normal life, I should of go to highschool and hang out with other kids
but I was recruited and sent to last line of defence. I spent mine young adulthood as human waste.
no, we never been, even in time of yugoslavia.

Dimitris Psachos

“are you a serb lovers? do you have serbian roots? do you suck serbian dicks?”

Have you ever heard of cultural independence and love for the arts or is your nationalistic mind too narrow to understand that there are people in this world who despise military-politics-clergy and adore individual integrity?

“I should of had normal life, I should of go to highschool and hang out with other kids
but I was recruited and sent to last line of defence”

A lot of Greeks were recruited during several periods of he 20th century but when everything was over, they hated neither Turks nor Germans nor even the American and British intelligence. Please don’t be such a neo-nazi.

“no, we never been, even in time of yugoslavia.”

Even I, a Greek who supports his culture above all cultures will admit we have been ANIMALS MULTIPLE TIMES IN MY HISTORY, YES…WE HAVE BEEN ANIMALS AND SO HAVE BOSNIANS, CROATIANS AND ANY YUGOSLAVIAN BEFORE AND AFTER THE SPLIT!!!! IF YOU DENY THAT, YOU’RE A FASCIST PIG!

(although now I know why you like James Cameron, let’s kill ’em all blockbuster way, huh?)

micky ward

am I on a trial here? :)))

“A lot of Greeks were recruited during several periods of he 20th century but when everything was over, they hated neither Turks nor Germans nor even the American and British intelligence. Please don’t be such a neo-nazi.”

what did they do? sing and dance together afterwords?

“Even I, a Greek who supports his culture above all cultures will admit we have been ANIMALS MULTIPLE TIMES IN MY HISTORY, YES…WE HAVE BEEN ANIMALS AND SO HAVE BOSNIANS, CROATIANS AND ANY YUGOSLAVIAN BEFORE AND AFTER THE SPLIT!!!! IF YOU DENY THAT, YOU’RE A FASCIST PIG!”

sure, we were executing all the prisoners and Bosnian serbs who were uprising against us but we
were fighting for our life.

“(although now I know why you like James Cameron, let’s kill ’em all blockbuster way, huh?)”

that sound’s like a good idea

Dimitris Psachos

“what did they do? sing and dance together afterwords?”

No, but they didn’t point the finger to every single Turkish and German family. You’re not on trial specifically, but nationalists like you are should be on trial (sorry Bobby, nationalism in the 21st century is one of the worst menaces of peace) who prefer to keep up with violence instead of being open-minded in their behavior.

“but we were fighting for our life.”

There’s not excuse for ANY nation / group in times like those. NO EXCUSE AT ALL!

micky ward

“There’s not excuse for ANY nation / group in times like those. NO EXCUSE AT ALL!”

thing is, we executed men. we never raped and killed women or killed children or set houses on fire.
and we never planed ethnic cleansing

I have my opinion about them, it will never change. feel free to detest me

Ari

I don’t think anyone despises you, Micky. You’re quite right that the bulk of atrocities during the war were committed by the Serbs even if one acknowledges that nobody had their hands clean. But, quite honestly, I feel sorry for you. If people can’t let go of their anger and hatred (justified or not), there’s really no hope.

On the other hand, to get back to the topic at hand, Kusturica’s Life Is A Miracle seemed to try way too hard to make a film about reconciliation, it felt quite contrived.

Dimitris Psachos

“thing is, we executed men.”

That makes you saints now, huh?

“I have my opinion about them”

People are not animals. Don’t forget about that. Individuality is worthier to respect than the mass. I detest you alright because you’re close-minded and I’m afraid of people like you. I can’t feel sorry for people like you like Ari said because it’s insulting to my beliefs.

“Kusturica’s Life Is A Miracle seemed to try way too hard to make a film about reconciliation, it felt quite contrived.”

Yes, I didn’t buy the whole love affair nor the ghost-like conscience (somehow revealed towards the end) and although it wasn’t as graphic as No Man’s Land was, it still seemed inferior to Tanovic’s neutrality.

micky ward

no need to feel sorry for me Dimitris :)

“(although now I know why you like James Cameron, let’s kill ’em all blockbuster way, huh?)”

could you please give James Cameron a break? man is superb filmmaker in his field.
I feel like everybody on this site is mocking me cause of him.

Dimitris Psachos

I also mock David Fincher but for different reasons. Although Cameron’s philosophy seems to be reflecting your political tyranny.

Bobby Wise

No breaks for Cameron if you won’t give breaks to Serbs! Gotta give something to get something.
