Empire's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema"

Jon K

A Mix of great films and not so great, a rather unexpected 2 and 3. The Apu Trilogy is at a very respectable 17, The Ring is above Hard Boiled which is above Persona. We all love lists, so what do you think of this one?

The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema

up to 50 now. pretty terrible list, and they have closely observed trains listed as a Polish film! ;-)

Had no idea Festen was still so highly regarded either.

Charlesdegaulle

a bit populist, as far as foreign films are concerned at least

Could have used one or two more Godards and perhaps a second Antonioni/Vitti project

Amelie No. 2, i won’t read beyond…

and what does “World Cinema” mean to fuckin’ Empire?

Ari

Battle of Algiers at #6 is not bad but Amelie at #2,Pan’s Labyrinth at #5, and City of God at #7 as the greatest films ever of the non-English language….. Yikes. The rest of the list is just boring. That they go heavy on the action/horror stuff makes sense since it’s Empire….

Dim, some of us happen to love Amelie ;)

Though number 2 is overdoing it a lot I must say…

And the list does suck quite a lot in general.

a travesty: maybe i missed it, but i didn’t see one Mizoguchi on it. and there seems to be a preponderance of films from the early 90’s to the present. how does anyone take this seriously?

Joks

^^i’m surprised Laventura was at no.40. seems pretty high for a slacker list like that.

City Of God is a decent film but it wouldn’t even make my top 100 best foreign movies let alone top 10 hahah.

Dimitris Psachos

well, Battle Royale is quite the fun but couldn’t they have picked a better Fukasaku?

what am i saying…..

p.s;: Cecil, Amelie is cute in a good way and i happen to like it as well as a romantic-comedy but….hell, i know nearly 1000 films better than Amelie ;)

“and there seems to be a preponderance of films from the early 90’s to the present.”

had they picked the right films, this preponderance wouldn’t have been bad at all, haha. but you cannot take Empire seriously…

Amelie annoyed me. i loved Deli.. and City Of Lost Children. after that it was a huge disappointment, especially after that Alien turd.

Come and See wasn’t such an obvious choice at 23 though.

no louis malle?

Aguirre at 19. that’s good, but doesn’t anyone find it strange that Herzog has gotten so much attention after ‘Grizzlyi Man’? For a while it seemed like he was forgotten, now every film fan seems to be in love with him. hehee

This seems like a random selection of critically approved films with little input and no credibility to speak of.

Ari

Yeah, you’re right, Joks. “Come and See” was unexpected. The Spirit of the Beehive as well.

Without seeing it i know it’ll be a celebration of ignorance, and news above that there’s no Mizoguchi confirms it. David Parkinson was Empire’s main writer on world cinema (i don’t know if he still is) and he rates Mizoguchi very highly so i wonder who picked the films, but in any event it was always likely to be dumbed down for the masses

Nightwatch? Seriously?

on the plus side, if this list convinces even a few of their readers to watch The Bicycle Thieves, 400 Blows, L’Aventura, Come and See etc, it’s not such a bad thing. But from a cinephile perspective, it’s a pretty damn ordinary list.

The fact that they have a section called “Hollywood Remake?” should be a clear indicator as to the audience they’re catering to. My response before clicking the link was “At least they’re opening up the possibilities of world cinema to people that wouldn’t otherwise look into it.” But that doesn’t really seem to be on their minds with a section that has such a name.

HA HA HA HA HA…….. Run Lola Run ahead of Ran.

T.J. Royal

House of Flying Daggers ahead of Rififi, Bande A Part and Ran. Why am I still reading this thing? (Continues reading)

T.J. Royal

Hmmmm. Ten Canoes looks like it’d be worth checking out.

T.J. Royal

Naturally they refer to Persona as the “quintessential Really Serious Euro Art House movie.” Naturally, Europe and Africa all share the same cinema.

Joks

lol T.J. be careful man! That list can raise blood pressure :-)

Ten Canoes was a surprising addition actually. It’s quite a good film, but nowhere near one of the best foreign films ever made. It’s definitely worth a look though.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is rated appropriately, en mi opinion. (At No. 66)

T.J. Royal

We don’t have Heimat listed on TheAuteurs.com yet. (1 point for Empire list)

T.J. Royal

Festen looks and sounds interesting.

T.J. Royal

Xala and Touki Bouki are both listed. (2 points for Empire’s list)

Akira at No. 51. (3 points)

I would like to see Kiarostami’s 10.
