Berjuan: I don’t think I had the pleasure of listening to his Whitman, unfortunately. But it was just the tone and pace, the music selections as a whole that gave it that relaxing feeling. Oh, and of course . . . . Shelby Foote.
@Shelby Foote
While I was watching I was thinking who is this man that speaks so beautifully. He can really express himself and convey the importance of what he says. I also like how his eyes move when he talks. I’m happy to see this doc getting some love. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to catch the entire thing soon.
Once upon a time in America
1985:
God’s Country
Louie Bluie
A Zed and Two Noughts
My birth year marked the release of my all-time favorite film. I’d like to think it was fate.

Goodfellas (Martin Scorsese)
I can’t remember watching any films that year
1974

1990
I see a few “1990” babies here and it’s good to know I’ve got some company. I haven’t seen that many films from that year but standouts are definitely…
Goodfellas, Miller’s Crossing, Days of Being Wild, and The Match Factory Girl, with my favorite being…

This film felt so fresh when I first saw it in my teens (and still does to this day) and to think it was released when I was a little over a month old…
1994 (in no particular order):
Clerks,
Pulp Fiction,
Forrest Gump,
The Shawshank Redemption,
Stargate
1965
Juliet of the Spirits
Alphaville
Pierrot le Fou
Doctor Zhivago (<— personal fave)
Quality of filmmaking was at a major premium in 65. And isn’t that interesting — ’63 and ’64 both are chock full of amazing titles, and then comes this … slow … year.
1978
“Behind Convent Walls” (it’s not one that I’d revisit as much as others on the list, but it’s a mighty impressive piece of erotica/exploitation)
“Blue Collar” (a great dramatic comedy about unions and management, really shows you that Richard Pryor was a dramatic genius apart from being a brilliant comic)
“Capricorn One” (a favourite from childhood, an intelligent conspiracy flick with lots of action and a brilliant cameo from Telly Savalas)
“Coma” (a creepy film from my childhood, one that I revisited just recently, still a great suspense thriller)
“The Deer Hunter” (very privileged to have experienced this on the big screen)
Halloween" (I’m not really interested in the remakes, I prefer the original Michael Myers film and I love the music)
“Heaven Can Wait” (I’ve seen the original “Here Comes Mr Jordan” but being a gridiron fan I must go with the remake)
“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (one of my very favourite films not just of 1978 but of all time; I also love the original)
“Midnight Express” (I love the acting, the script, the cinematography…and that score!)
“Superman” (although I reckon the sequel is better!)
“The Wiz” (Sidney Lumet didn’t fancy his own work on this one but it is a childhood favourite and I do have a soft spot for it even today)

Haha, ALL of Ken Burns’ films are that way. I have seen a lot of his work, and fallen asleep to most of it. I guess its a combination of the voices, the music and the slowly panning camera with no action aside from the interviewees (and they aren’t exactly flailing their arms about wildly). The Mark Twain one is probably my favorite to fall asleep to, though Baseball is pretty good too.

I don’t think that this is a great film by any means, but I had a HUGE crush on Sarah Jessica Parker in this. And the girl played by Vinessa Shaw was pretty cute too (as she was in Eyes Wide Shut). And I had no idea that the little girl was Thora Birch. I suddenly feel very weird that I have seen her nude.

Kind of a weak year aside from these. I was only three months too late for Three Colours (sigh).
God, I wish I was born in some exciting film year like Odilonvert and everyone else. Instead I was just born in 1997. Yeah, really exciting.
