edit: finally rewatched RESERVOIR DOGS last month for the first time since…1995? And I’d definitely say Keitel’s and Roth’s performances are its strongest points.

Mean Streets was solid all the way around, and even if I can admit it is not the best Scorsese, it his my favorite Scorsese film.
Keitel held the film together as DeNiro was wild and there was chaos all around Keitel was mostly calm and cool.
38 years on, he has had bigger performances, but I still altogether, Mean Streets is his best.
Keitel’s performance is hit and miss in Ulysses Gaze i thought. At times he is very effective while at others you can tell he is struggling with the language differences.
Anyway, for movies where Harvey is in the lead:

^^They are about level, but Keitel’s character is more complex in Fingers than in B.T i think. He seems more layered and interesting. but Toback isn’t as good a film maker as Ferrara so……..

although he does get on his knees and let out a few of those trademark anguished cries that are nothing less than the sound of a man that has watched his entire family being slaughtered right before his very eyes.
or one that has been evicted after receiving the largest overdue back tax bill of all time.
I would like to say Bad Lieutenant, as many of you have, but I equally loved him in Smoke.

Oh hell, when you put it that way, I can’t help but feel foolish for choosing in the first place.

I was waiting for this response earlier. Don’t assume i have misunderstood the nature of his character’s ‘dilemma’(or more specifically, crisis) in Ulysses Gaze – i haven’t!! The film is about cultural and existential instability. I understand this. the character is not meant to be ‘concrete’ and assured in the traditional sense, but i’m not convinced he conveys those aspects of his character’s existence as consistently as he could have. and he is clearly have trouble speaking Greek in a few scenes where he is expected to. He looks uncomfortable.
Personally i think this is the fault of Angelopoulos. He doesn’t tend to direct English speaking actors as well, or even scenes in English for that matter. Have you seen Dust Of Time? The problem is evident there as well, and also in the English speaking moments in The Suspended Step Of The Stork. They just come off as ackward, even moreso than usual.
If that’s not what you are suggesting(i.e that i have perhaps misunderstood the character or role) then i officially retract the above paragraph ;-)

He is great in Smoke, i agree with Mike, plus he gets to do a reversal/reprise of that ‘take it on the arches’ line from Fingers
