Favorite Horror-Comedy Movies of the 80s

I love films like Fright Night, The Monster Squad, The Lost Boys, The Evil Dead and Gremlins. This is an awesome genre and a type of film we don’t really see anymore. What are some of your favorites?

An American Werewolf in London
Return of the Living Dead

There’s a list on my profile page that may have more.

Gremlins
The Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness (more of a comedy, but still)
Return of the Living Dead

Special Admissions:
Brain Damage- It’s not a favorite but boy, is it something. It features one of the most indescribably gruesome and insane death scenes I have ever scene, down with a very low budget at that. It makes the forest scene in The Evil Dead look tame.

Student Bodies- Essentially a spoof but it is hit and miss a lot of the time as a lot of the spoofing is often spelled out.

Pierre already said it, but BLOOD DINER deserves to be mentioned again. Also:

BLOODSUCKING PHARAOHS IN PITTSBURGH
WAXWORK
POPCORN
ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES
NIGHT OF THE CREEPS
DEAD-END DRIVE IN
CLASS OF NUKE’EM HIGH
THE TOXIC AVENGER
RABID GRANNIES
HEAD OF THE FAMILY

To edit myself: Some of those films are from the 90’s and Killer Tomatoes is from the 70’s but they have the same sort of humor I think we’re discussing here, so there.

A little film called GHOSTBUSTERS…maybe not horrific enough for prior inclusion in this thread, but I think it’s worth mentioning.

hands down Return of the living dead ….. send more paramedics

Basket Case- creepy, funny and inspires one to have a shower after watching

The Stuff – from the warped Larry Cohen the marshmallow horror movie

of course Evil Dead one and two

Frankenhooker (technically 1990 but was shot in 89)

Dolls from Stuart Gordon even better than re-animator

The Thing -more of a traditional scarefest but some moments of levity

Trancers = more of a sci=fi but definately fits in this topic

“Send more cops.”

Yes, Return of the Living Dead is an unsung horror great, written by Dan O’Bannon (Alien) and co-starring Lienna Quigley, one of the great Scream Queens of 80’s schlock horror.

Blood Diner
Re-Animator
Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn
Gremlins
Class of Nuke ’Em High
The Toxic Avenger
Motel Hell
Creepshow
Meet the Feebles
Night of the Creeps

@ Cacophonism: Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh was ‘91, so it doesn’t count and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is ’78. Both exemplary Horror Comedies though.

A few gems I don’t see mentioned:

Alligator – Robert Forster and Henry Silva in the best giant alligator movie ever made.
The Howling – Joe Dante/John Sayles satirize pop therapy via a werewolf movie.
Q – Michael Moriarty unleashes method madness within Larry Cohen’s hardboiled flying serpent movie.
Strange Invaders – Space invaders keep the 50s alive forever.
The Deadly Spawn – Affectionate evocation of 50s monster invasion movies that has a couple of surprisingly nasty narrative turns.
Night of the Comet – The greatest use of a Cyndi Lauper song in a zombie movie ever.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre II – Follow-up to the original plays everything as a grand, savage farce, and features Dennis Hopper’s second greatest performance of 1986.
Chopping Mall – Killer robots vs. mallrats and Dick Miller. Surprisingly competitive.
Monster in the Closet – Awkwardly broad in the usual Troma way, but gentle too, in a very un-Troma way.
Return to Salem’s Lot – Sam Fuller steals the movie out from under Larry Cohen and every actor in sight.
Street Trash – A cautionary tale about the dangers of drinking hooch from untrusted sources.
Night Life – Teen angst among the living dead.
