Admittedly, I haven’t seen enough Rohmer. But when I heard news of his passing, a few titles sprung to mind that define him for me. Not bests, but favs: Claire’s Knee, La Collectionneuse, and Pauline at the Beach
Anyone have some personally favorites? Recommendations?
The Green Ray is a very personal favorite, but sadly it is only one of two Rohmer films that I have seen (but I will be viewing five more of the 6 moral tales soon!).
But TGR has my highest recommendation. See it if you haven’t!
Love in the Afternoon will always be my favourite.
Is The Green Ray available? After the Rohmer is Dead! thread had many people mentioning it, I wanted to put it on my Netflix, but it isn’t available there. Is it just not released yet or is this one of those cases where Netflix just fails the post?
My Night at Maud’s and Pauline at the Beach
Boyfriends and Girlfriends
The Triple Agent
Full Moon in Paris at the moment – but still have yet to even finish his Comedy and Proverbs series.
Perceval le Gallois
I think Comedies and Proverbs contains Rohmer’s two strongest films (The Aviator’s Wife and Full Moon in Paris), as well as his two weakest (Pauline at the Beach and The Green Ray). Obviously I prefer Rohmer’s characters at work rather than on vacation.
