The whole scene that ends up with HAL reading the astronauts lips…just awesome

I’m with Steve. That silent close-up of the lip-reading with the immediate cut to “Intermission” is one of the most chilling things ever (reminds me a lot of the great POV in REAR WINDOW when Stewart makes eye contact with Burr through the binoculars).

Otherwise probably something bathed in red in the scene when Dave shuts-down HAL.

Tough one. The bone —> spaceship shot is undeniable impressive.

Also Trumbull’s tour de force – can’t wait to see what he’ll bring us in the coming years (http://www.blip.tv/file/3806899)…

It’s amazing how many indelible images this film contains. My contribution is not the most impressive but a shot I always loved. After HAL shuts him out, Dave pilots his pod to the side access door on the Discovery hull. As seen through the approaching pod’s window, the door gets bigger and bigger and the beams from the pod light the door up brighter and brighter. A simple documentary like effect that gives an incredible sensation of being there.
