With the enthusiastic response Let the Right One In is getting, I thought it would be a good time to give a nod to some of the best vampire films to date. Here are some of my favorites:

Let the Right One In
The Hunger
Rabid
Near Dark
Vampyr
Nosferatu
Blood for Dracula
Vampyros Lesbos
Ganja & Hess
Love at First Bite
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter
Salem’s Lot
Fright Night
Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary
Cronos
Martin
Black Sunday

Hey, Lester.

I’ll see your Nosferatu and Vampyr (two of my great favs) and raise you Bela Lugosi in Dracula, plus the Spanish version that was filmed simultaneously on the same sets.

Any movie with Christoper Lee as Dracula is solid entertainment for me.

I’ll also give a nod to the Morrisey/Warhol Dracula you mention above (creepy Udo Kier craving “whergins” gives me belly laffs).

I groove on The Vampire Lovers for its similar vibe and crazy characters.

Coppolla’s Dracula is a riot of production design.

And for a real guilty pleasure, check out Slaughter of the Vampires (1962). Here’s a review I wrote a few years back:

Cteve sez, “check it out.”

Cheers,

Hey Steve! I’ll see your Bela Lugosi Dracula and raise you Horror of Dracula from 1958.

And thanks for the recommendations. I’ll check out Slaughter of the Vampires and your review.

i really love vampire films. my favorites of the style are “from dusk till dawn” and “the vampire’s kiss”.

Grey Daisies

The best one:
Nosferatu – Phantom der Nacht (1979) by Werner Herzog. Period.
Other good ones:
El Vampiro (1957)
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)
Dance of the Vampires (1967)
Nadja (1994)
The Addiction (1995)
Trouble Every Day (2001)

Vampyr is my particular favorite, but Daughters of Darkness is great too — Delphine Seyrig is the most glamourous vampire ever.

Justin Biberkopf

I am about to commit heresy but I find Vampyr too arty and subtle to work as a horror film. It just plain bores me. Some nice shots, though — the disembodied shadows, the flour burial, etc.

From Dusk till Dawn is pretty good, Bobby, though the sequel is to be avoided.

My favorite is the one Grey Daisies mentioned: The Addiction.

@SCOTT- You beat me, but good call on “DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS”. If there’s one particular moody, unorthodox but beautifully shot (not to mention sexy) vampire flick that I’d recommend, this is it. Delphine Seyrig and Andrea Rau are one gorgeous pair of vampires. Great ending too, and that tail-away shot in the final sequence is quite memorable.

Here’s an interesting (sometimes dubious) list of top vampire movies: http://snarkerati.com/movie-news/top-70-vampire-movies-of-all-time/

Mostly, I can only think of the pop vampire movies I like. I’ll have to check out some of the other recommendations in this forum.

Here are my faves:

Near Dark
Blade 2
The Fearless Vampire Killers
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Let the Right One In
The Lost Boys

The Lost Boys is a good one, specially the part in which the vampires hang from the train tracks.
But personally I like “Once Bitten”, with the great Jim Carrey!!!

Ferrara’s The Addiction
Let the Right One In (how cliche)
Herzog’s Nosferatu

Jose – I’m seeing The Addiction pop up a lot on this thread. I’m going to check this one out.

Nosferatu, both Murnau´s and Herzog´s.
The Shadow of the Vampyre, in that vein, was pretty good.
Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon lesbian fun in The Hunger is still crystal clear in my head.
Enjoyed Gary Oldman as Dracula in Coppola´s Bram Stoker´s Dracula.
Del Toro´s Cronos is a pretty impresive turnaround on the vampire genre; it´s still my favorite Del Toro movie to this date.

Still got to cacht Let The Right One In.

“Vampyr” would have to be my favorite. It amazes me how contemporary it looks. “Let the Right One in” is also high up there

Amongst my favorites (knowing that I’ll leave something out) …
NOSFERATU (both versions)
SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE
VAMPYR
DAUGHTER OF DRACULA
EL VAMPIRO
HORROR OF DRACULA
BRIDES OF DRACULA
KISS OF THE VAMPIRE
(the Hammer, although the newer one of that title is kind of interesting)
DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS
THIRST
HABIT
BLOOD & DONUTS
DRACULA’S CURSE
(from the2002 German TV miniseries adaptation of DRACULA – not the Leigh Scott)
THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS
DRACULA 2000
(if only for explaining Dracula’s aversion to silver)
the BBC miniseries COUNT DRACULA

Respectively:

The Hunger – Tony Scott’s unintended masterpiece. This is an extended music video that is all gauze and mood featuring Bowie and Deneuve.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Let the Right One In

Horror of Dracula – I’m told that this is the best place to start for Hammer horror. I haven’t explored the Hammer House much, but Christopher Lee’s count is excellent.

Nosferatu

there are a lot of vampire flicks listed here I like, but one that hasn’t been mentioned is Larry Fessenden’s “Habit”. It was one of those films that stuck with me for days after seeing it.

Not a huge vampire fan. The only two the I really enjoy are

1. Nosferatu
2. Dracula: Pages From A Virgin’s Diary

& let the records show that if someone includes Twilight I’m going to have to mercy kill them.

>>there are a lot of vampire flicks listed here I like, but one that hasn’t been mentioned is Larry Fessenden’s “Habit”. It was one of those films that stuck with me for days after seeing it.<,
Uh, yeah, it’s in my list. And it IS very haunting … that dream (or is it?) sequence tour of the ship is chilling & memorable.

>>MARTIN<<
Ack! I knew I’d forget something!

>>let the records show that if someone includes Twilight I’m going to have to mercy kill them<<
Mercy kill? No, no, no. Slowly and with excruciating painfulness.
“What delicious torture!”
