Favourite Film of 1999

The Green Mile is my favourite of all time and my favourite of 1999, what is yours as there were so many great films in this year?
There are so many to choose from. Another great one is Fight Club but I did not feel that this had the beautiful storytelling and acting that TGM had, neither did it have the directing,
I have not yet seen American Beauty but I am sure that this will be a very popular choice on the list, Toy Story 2 was also released in 1999 and so was the much less ‘The Bone Collector’.
Kubrick’s final masterpiece ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ was made and so was the new Star Wars era, The Phantom Menace was released in this year.
The Sixth Sense will be another popular choice for many and so will The Cider House Rules.
Which is your favourite?

Eh, not much of a year in my book. Lots of enjoyable and entertaining ones, but the only one that sticks out for me is Eyes Wide Shut. And I tend to be much higher on it than most.

The Limey is an overlooked treasure.

I agree with the Limey. It’s Soderburgh’s best film and it gets lost in the shuffle somehow.

I’m an Eyes Wide Shut man. And, I also honestly think The Talented Mr. Ripley is a much better film than it is ever given credit for being.

The Green Mile? I dunno. I will agree it’s an entertaining yarn, but that year was so full of such rich pieces of thoughtful and provocative cinema that it makes that film seem more of a summertime popcorn time filler. I will admit, however, that I didn’t see it until years after its theatrical run on DVD, and it was better than i thought it would be.

‘99 is such a busted year, can’t really get behind ‘The Green Mile’ when you have…

Audition
Being John Malkovich
Fight Club
American Movie
Titus
Eyes Wide Shut
Magnolia
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc
The Straight Story
The Limey

….That’s a saucy top 10. As opposed to more recent years…

The Green Mile sounds like a joke. Really, all Darabont’s work sounds like a joke.
