Minimalist films that i have enjoyed include
anything by Andrei Tarkovsky
Kasaba aka Small town by Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Distance by Hirokazu Koreeda
This Charming Girl by Lee Yoon-ki
also anything by Aki Kaurismäki
and 3-Iron by Ki-duk Kim
MAN PUSH CART | by Ramin Bahrani
UMBERTO D. | by V. De Sica
Goodbye Dragon Inn, Blissfully Happy and Peter Greenaway’s The Falls (though the latter titles is maybe one of the funniest movies ever made so whether it can be called minimalist…)
See Robert Bresson’s claustrophobic, bare 1963 68 min film The Trial of Jeanne of Arc for a true taste of minimalism—then see the the very opposite of minimalism in Dreyer’s very rich 1928 Passion of Jean of Arc for comparison covering the same historic document of Joan’s actual trial.
Ha! Bresson singled out Dreyer’s film for criticism in his Notes on a Cinematographer, as he thought Falconetti’s performance was far too theatrical and false, emotion-wringing
Correct as usual and thanks for expanding upon my point, Kenji.
Would it be too mainstream of me to say Strangers in Paradise and The Bicycle Thieves?
Also, I think that William Friedkin’s Bug is rather minimalistic, and good.
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days.
I will agree with a previous post on Van Sant’s Gerry, an engrossing and hypnotizing film.
