Singin’ in the Rain. Not only is that one of my favorite music moments, it’s one of my favorite scenes, period.
Tros: The opening credits in watchmen was “The Times They Are A’ Changin”. That was also the best scene in the movie, by the way.
I think Wes Anderson really knows how to use music well in his films.
When Margot Tenenbaum gets off the bus in Royal Tenebaums “These Days” by Nico is playing. I’ve always thought that scene worked really well.
And then I love all the Seu Jorge covers of Bowie in The Life Aquatic, as well as the Sigur Ros song played when Zissou finds the shark.
I forgot to add Thus Spake Zarathustra (2001: A Space Odyssey)
as well as all of Nino Rota’s music in 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita.
Ahhh one more and then I’m done :D
If I had to pick a favorite soundtrack it would be the zither score in The Third Man.
To add on to Apollo, I really thought The Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack in The Royal Tenenbaums was amusing and endearing, especially in the scene with Margot and Royal in the restaurant… The use of The Blue Danube in 2001 was brilliant, and even though it’s banal, I think the Garden State soundtrack accents the movie perfectly.
Oh and I don’t think that any of Miyazaki’s films would be quite as good without Joe Hisaishi’s breathtaking soundtracks… especially Spirited Away
o yea i second caetano veloso in talk to her
Brazil in Brazil
also the entire score to There Will Be Blood
I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this or not, but the “Miracle Cure” song in Ken Russell’s TOMMY has always impressed me as one of the best uses of music to accompany visuals in movie musical history. The idea of people worshiping a statue of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt billowing up (a la THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH) and wearing Monroe masks as part of a religious ceremony is great satire on celebrity culture and organized religion.
More important, the choreography and pacing of movement, the editing, and the lyrics and music themselves make it an unforgettable set piece. I had the opportunity to chat with Ken Russell about this scene and he was just a delight (once “lubricated” by alcohol).
Veloso’s performance in Talk to Her was my first exposure of his music, and, yes, I agree it was awesome. I tracked down a track of the tune on a cd (not the soundtrack) and it wasn’t as good.
