I have yet to see some of his mid 80’s to mid 90’s work, but I’m particularly fond of his earlier work with the Zanzibar-group:
- Le Révélateur,
- Le Lit de la vierge,
- La Cicatrice intérieure.
Also Les Hautes solitudes (and Le Bleu des origines) will always hold a special place in my heart – just because of Jean Seberg.
La Cicatrice Interieure
Les Amants Reguliers
Les Hautes Solitudes
Les Hautes Solitudes
Savuage Inocencce
Les Amants Reguliers
La Revelateu is my bonus, is one of the most srange and dark movies I ever seen.
. Le Revelateur (the best experimental film in the history)
. Le Lit de la Vierge
. Le Bleu des Origines
And then…
Sauvage Innocense
La Cicatrice interieur
Regular Lovers
Le Berceau de Cristal
Les Hautes Solitudes
I’m working on seeing some Garrel soon. I want to see the one inspired by his relationship with Nico, I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar.
J’entends plus la guitare
Le Révélateur- Yes, Wolf, quite likely.
La naissance de l’amour
La Cicatrice interieur
Sauvage Innocense
When his latest film, “La frontière de l’aube” was screened at the Rotterdam film festival this year, it was preceded by his earliest short film (the earliest still in existance): “Les enfants desaccordées” (1964, 15 min.). Teenage kicks, for sure…Unbelievable how developed the Garrel touch was at age 16.
Does anybody happen to know how to get one’s hands on Droit de visite, Marie pour mémoire, La concentration, Athanor, Un ange passe, Le berceau de cristal, Voyage au jardin des mots, and/or Le bleu des origines – ? S’il vous plait…
I have a really bad dub of “Le Berceau du Cristal” on VHS that I bought at Amoeba. Wish the other early ones were available.
“Je’attends plus le guitaire” and “Emergency Kisses” just came out on DVD as a set. Both are quite good. In the latter it’s quite amusing to see little Louis Garrel scoot around on his tricycle.
Hit one of those torrent sites, you might get lucky. Not that I in any way encourage such actions.
A toss-up between Liberté, la nuit and L’enfant secret
Les Hautes Solitudes
Sauvage Innocence
Le Lit de La Vierge
I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar
Anyone know what the story is on the running time for Regular Lovers? IMDB lists it at 183 minutes but the DVD for sale on Amazon lists it at 175 minutes. Is this Amazon’s usual sloppiness or is something wrong here?
I concur w Rock and Roll:" La Revelateur"! Though I also really like “Regular Lovers” and admire “I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar.”
Mike, the US disk was taken from a PAL source so suffers from speedup, hence the running time..
Cinema’s greatest romanticist. My four favorites of his films are:
1. The Inner Scar (One of my four or five favorite movies of all times)
2. Le révélateur (The only movie that made me to weep like a baby in TWO MINUTES and during a sequence as banal as a woman descending stairs. It is usually seen as a film about lovers on the run. I like to think it is a film about the games we play to fill the void ahead of us. )
3. She Spent So Many Hours Under the Sun Lamps (Also devastatingly sad)
4. Regular Lovers (An epic masterpiece. The Garrel film for people who don’t like Garrel)
5. Les Hautes Solitudes (A grand opera which faces form its notes)
Definitely one of the greats.

The DP of his latest, “Un ete brulant” is Willy Kurant — a great cinematographer whose credits include “Le Depart,” “The Immortal Story,” “Masculin-Feminin,” “Anna,” and “Pootie Tang.”
_ “Le Depart,” “The Immortal Story,” “Masculin-Feminin,” “Anna,” and “Pootie Tang.”_
Which of the above is most decidedly out of place?
I’m just getting into Garrel and have only seen a handful of his work so far, but I think “Le lit de la vierge” might top it for me. It gave me one of the most powerful transcendental experiences I’ve ever felt in all of cinema. There are only two other films that I’ve seen that have given me as strong of a feeling: Vigo’s “L’Atalante” and Tarkovsky’s “Zerkalo”
“The Inner Scar” is a close runner up. I had no idea where I was while I was watching that film, but I absolutely loved every second I spent there.
Only seen 2:
I Can no Longer Hear the Guitar
Regular Lovers
I liked Guitar abit more, though I like them both. Has anyone seen Burning Hot summer? Might check it out next week.
Liberté, la nuit
&
L’enfant secret
