Favourite scandinavian movie

Joakim Møller Jensen

After Susanne Bier won a Golden Globe (Best Foreign Language Film) for her movie “In a Better World” I was wondering:

Which scandinavian movie is your favourite?

I myself is a big fan of Anders Thomas Jensen: The Green Butchers, Flickering Lights etc.

I would like to get inspired, so post post post!

Might consider this being Favorite contemporary Scandinavian Movie as I think Bergman will dominate the poll otherwise.

Fav. Contemporary Scandinavian Film – Breaking the Waves

Fav. overall – Fanny Och Alexander

non-Bergman, eh?

probably Thriller: A Cruel Picture

Favorite overall: Smiles of a Summer Night

“I think Bergman will dominate the poll otherwise.”

knowing MUBI, Dreyer will likely dominate.

Nice handful Kenji. I’d like to, if I may, supplement your choices with a few of mine:

Songs From the Second Floor(Andersson)
The Inheritence(Per Fly)
Show Me Love & Together(Moodysson)
Epidemic(Von Trier)
Noi Albanoi(Kari)

Hej, godt med nogle danskere herinde!

Denmark:

Ordet / Dreyer (and several others mentionable)
Riget / Antichrist / Dogville / Dancer in the Dark / Trier
Häxan / Benjamin Christensen
Reconstruction / Christopher Boe
Festen / Thomas Vinterberg
Anders Thomas Jensens short films, maybe. Not something i like myself, neither Susanne Bier, Scherfig, Per Fly and other mediocre new danish directors.

Sweden:
Nattvardsgästerna / Bergman
Persona / Bergman
Wild Strawberries / Bergman
Tystnaden / Bergman
Såsom i en Spegel / Bergman
Lad den rette komme ind / Tomas Alfredson
Du Levande / Andersson
Songs from the Second Floor / Andersson
Offret / Tarkovsky (made in sweden, speaking swedish)

Norway and Iceland have made a bunch of films the last years but i’ve never seen a single good one. Dead Snow perhaps.

In Finland Aki Kaurismäki made that trilogy.

The title of this thread should be changed to “Favorite Nordic movie” if people start including Finland and Iceland, as they are not part of Scandinavia.

As for my favorite, it’s a toss up between Show Me Love and Thriller: A Cruel Picture. From one extreme to the other!
