Time Piece (1965 – Jim Henson)
The Big Shave (1967 – Martin Scorsese)
Foutaises (1989 – Jean-Pierre Jeunet)
Theory of Achievement (1991 – Hal Hartley)
The Heart of the World (2000 – Guy Madden) Seconded!
i’m thinking perhaps film history and the canon of greatest films should be freed up a bit from the tyranny of size- after all Vermeer’s paintings weren’t exactly enormous
Thanks, Vellaem, i’ve now seen Foutaises on youtube- an ideal site for this sort of list. I like Foutaises, witty and inventive, but i don’t like Amélie, looming large when i was in the front row- flee, flee, fresh air!
It’s just one suggestion, but I love More by Mark Osborne.
If anyone gets the channel IFC they have a collection of short films they run every so often, they’re pretty innovative. Also, the output of Cinema 18 is great, I suggest everyone pick up their European Short Films disc.
OK shoot me but my kids have the Ice Age Movies.. and I love the Shorts with the squirrel.
HEART OF THE WORLD thirded! Brilliant film.
I’ll add Martin McDonagh’s SIX SHOOTER to the mix.
Never really watch shorts that often but the Street of Crocodiles by the Quay Brothers is amazing
The one that really sticks in my head, is a very early short directed by Scorsese (1964), which is called: “It’s Not Just You, Murray!”
@Kenji
Yes, “Foutaises” is definitely “Amelie” encapsulated and more easily digestible. It is a short catalogue of weird habits & pastimes of different people, as opposed to Amelie’s long form version on the same theme. It is interesting to see that Jeunet is still obsessed with lists of strange predilections that he uses to individuate characters.
@All
“Time Piece” is highly recommended, though rather bleak. It demonstrates the human condition in all sort of scenarios in under 9 minutes. The short was nominated for an Academy Award, and can be purchased on I-Tunes.

“Heart of The World” is retro-expressionist, described as a parody of Soviet propaganda, and very brilliant. The short concerns two brothers drilling to the center of the world in competition for the love a woman. It is much like watching “Metropolis” in 5 minutes, only better. The short is available on a DVD called “The Guy Maddin Collection” put out by Zeitgeist Films, and packaged with “Ice Nymphs” and “Archangel.”
ill add Black Rider (1993) by Pepe Danquart.
ah thanks for that, i’ve just seen Black Rider, a neat twist
I really love the triology released last year by Janus: Red Balloon, White Main and Paddle to the Sea. Red Balloon takes me back to third grade and reel to reel projectors. A real treat.
Many here worth seconding, but I’ll put in my two cents with one that I re-watched recently: “The Lounge Bar,” a 1988 New Zealand short directed by and starring Don McGlashan and Harry Sinclair (come to think of it, I may have first heard about it here on the Auteurs!) Wonderful and quirky with a charming song sung by McGlashan.
THE LOTTERY (1969)
Glory at Sea and Death To Tinman
