Efe, congratulations on the beta site!!!

due to slow internet connections in london, could not have seen the film yet, but some thoughts… (maybe already touched upon by someone else):

- in terms of the interface, would be great if there is a ’’portal’’ within the site. profile page could be the one but still feel that we have to go back and forth to other pages…
-
will be any data feeding to the profile page in the future? like pandora, would be interesting to see the auto data feed based on the past transactions
— maybe this does not comply with the vision of your business, but will it become possible to search the film based on writers or actors?

Good luck!

chi&teppei;
thank you! we are collecting a lot of data and will use collaborative filtering and recommendations when we have enough films & users and the data is statistically significant. searching films based on writers and actors is also a great suggestion; I don’t know why we didn’t think of that before..:)

I’d like to be able to change the order of favorite directors on my profile.

Eli Fox

This may seem trivial but I think it would be nice to have. For the top list, if someone could change the order of the films on it (instead of removing the films and then having to add them again) or if the list was somehow automatically ordered chronologically, or alphabetically.

Could we see who made the last comment on threads?

Maybe comments in the forum should be in order of the time they appeared, meaning, the newest ones should be at the top of the page. I’m interested in seeing the freshest comments immediately, then scrolling down if I want to track the conversation from that point on. That’s the type of thing I’d have to try out to see if I like it. One thing for sure, I don’t like having to scroll all the way down to the bottom of a long page to see the newest comment.

That’s a minor thing. This site is amazing. I felt like a little kid at Christmas when I first got on and saw everything in here. And the best thing is, I know it will only get better and better.

i think you’ll need some way of breaking topics, such as KUBRICK, into subcategories. Otherwise you’ll just have 654 posts about random Kubrick thoughts by any random poster, instead of posts on A Clockwork Orange in this sub-category, posts about 2001 here, books on Kubrick there, film festivals and news in another, you get the picture I hope.

I would also rather see who most recently posted on a topic instead of who created it. Then I could tell when someone replies to my post!

There’s a desperate need for an ‘ignore’ button. If there’s a particular user that’s making a nuisance of himself I’d like to be able to just click ‘ignore’ and from that point on his posts will not be shown on my screen.

We need to put in place a better system to prevent those who are abusing the site on a regular basis. We need to keep track of ip addresses so they can’t just keep changing their username. Obviously, we need to prevent user names already in existence from being used. We (the site) should be able to delete offensive posts/threads permanently and keep track of the ip addresses of those misusing the site and ban them if they do. We should have an active misuse reporting mechanism, generated by users, and not allow offenders to just change their on-site name to escape the consequences. Spamming and trolling are taking over on the weekends. We need to curb this activity to maintain the viability of this very visible and valuable site.

Everyone, I wanted to drop in real quick and let everyone know that change is coming in a matter of days. The forum has clearly reached a critical mass where guidelines are needed to enforce common decency and civility. The name spoofing, spamming and over-the-top vulgarity are absolutely not acceptable. Vigorous disagreement is one thing, but a number of individuals have seriously crossed the line. This is a warning right now that anyone involved in this behavior is running a serious risk of being banned indefinitely from the site.

Just wanted to say here – as I just have on Shotzi’s troll thread – thanks auteurs staff for a swift response to our latest troll attack (talking about the obscene Shotzl images all over the site last night when I left). I come back today (Tuesday), and everything is gone. Exactly what we needed to do. If these tiny handful of people are constantly stone-walled, deleted, and discouraged they will quickly move elsewhere. My prediction, at least. We’ll see how it goes, but I think we are winning out and things can get back to normal – well, ‘normal’ for us.

Again, a big thank you to the auteurs staff for their prompt action.

Thanks for posting the Forum guidelines and establishing the friendly moderators. The offensive material is now gone. I hope your efforts – with everyone’s co-operation – will bring sanity back to the forum and prevent spamming and abuse. If any of us sees a problem, please use the reporting mechanism in the Forum guidelines to contact our moderators. I appreciate the auteurs’ staff response to member concerns. Happy posting to all. Let’s get back to making this a fun, enlivening, and creative place to be. I also hope the stealing of site usernames has been or is being resolved.

You need to have a reply feature that allows you to reply to the poster you want to instead of always having to address the person you wish to speak to. Also it would be great if an email feature was added to this reply that alerts you whenever someone replies to you.

I have to really wonder who in their right mind would pick THIS site to “troll?”

That’s like me walking into MoMa on the night of a Monet exhibit and screaming incessantly about Bergman, isn’t it? Oh wait no…that’s still too cerebral. Maybe walking in and screaming about my genitals would work…I am sorry, I just fail to see the point in trolling a bunch of art-film-fans. Can someone explain this to me in a way that makes sense?

What are they hoping to gain? Nothing…just a reaction? I’m so clueless as to the whole “trolling” thing really. It just seems to be there are thousands of better forums to “troll” if the intent is to upset people or get a reaction.

Oh well, I’m off to stand in the lobby of MoMa now!

It may be worth considering having charging a one-time nominal fee to be allowed to post on the site like they do on Metafilter. It takes care of much of the troll problem and the charge could be put towards a movie viewing so anyone signing up would be getting something in return. Of course this would only work if there is significant demand for being a part of the conversations here, but I know, at least, I would be willing to pay a little to get rid of the trolls.

It would be nice to be able to approve comments BEFORE they show up on our wall. Not everyone may be concerned with this, so maybe it could just be an optional privacy setting.

Fredo

Some older threads aren’t getting bumped to the top of the forum page.
And moderators shouldn’t be allowed to post (or should I say, posters shouldn’t be moderators). Conflict of interest.

I’m not sure if anybody mentioned this yet, but one thing I’d really love is:

Some kind of indication that you’ve read a thread on the forums, or that it contains new posts. This could be done with a small icon next to the thread’s title, as with the phpBB software. For example, the icon could be blue if the thread hadn’t been read yet or contained new posts, and white if you’d already read the contents.

As somebody who browses and posts here often, it’s bothersome to have to continually check a thread to see if there’s been any new conversation in it.

A few thoughts:

I think it would be nice if the website owners made the review section on the film pages into a discussion forum where people can discuss and debate the movie in question. It would make the site more dynamic and interactive.

Having a fixed list of directors and films from which people can pick their “favourites” is unnecessarily limiting. Consider giving members the freedom to freely choose their own favourites rather than forcing them to pick from a limited selection.

Same goes with the profile pictures and style sections. Give people the option of uploading an image they like…and describing their “style” in their own words.

Every page for a film should have a short clip of the film or it’s theatrical trailer. Some of them do but alot don’t.

Law

Could we have some kind of film submission feature? Like you get us to email you the images, title, details of the film and you all just double check it then add it in. That way, it will save you a lot of work and allow users to get the many films they want into the database.

Since I don’t want to clutter things up with a new topic, this seems the most appropriate place to ask:

• How does one change the text color of one’s username (I see the raw coding in the header of such users’ profile pages– their visibility is some sort of glitch, though)?
• How does one add simple formatting to forum comments? You know, italic, bold, underline, blockquote, hrefs, etc. My HTML attempts are cleansed upon posting.

Thanks!

Oh, also: the SEARCH feature doesn’t work in Google Chrome. No problems in Firefox. Don’t use IE, but I assume that it’s functional there.

The search function works in Chrome for me too.

But I wanted to say that I like The World…’s idea of a film submission feature.

A couple things:
1.Another section of the categories called Challenges where maybe once a month you guys post filmmaking challenges( not us you) for us. It doesn’t have to be for a prize or anything but there should be an acknowledged winner.

2. There should be a films in common feature, so when you go to a profile page and the person has like 200 favorite films, there’d be a little box that shows you what favorite films you have in common with that person.

I don’t know about the new category but I think you could definitely get the second one up and running.

Thanks,
Ilan
