Agnes Varda
Nina Menkes
Allison Anders
Madonna
Lina Wertmüller
Leni Riefenstahl
Nicole Holofcener
Rebecca Miller
Ida Lupino, Jodie Foster, Isabel Coixet, Diane Keaton, Julie Delpy, Amy Heckerling, Nora Ephron, Elaine May, Penny Marshall
What did Madonna direct? It’s weird how big a percentage of directors that were actresses there are.
Julie Taymor
Catherine Hardwicke
Tamara Jenkins (although “The Savages” is the only movie I know she made, she might not have done anything else)
Ida Lupino, Vera Chytilova, Sophia Coppola, Agnes Varda, Alice Guy…
Let’s not forget Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johannson, who are apparently both directing shorts for the upcoming film “New York, I love You”.
Also Lynne Ramsey, director of the fantastic ‘Ratcatcher’ and bleak ‘Morvern Callar’. We need her back, she’s a real talent.
Larisa Shepitko
Leni Riefenstahl, Lina Wertmuller, Elaine May, Jane Campion…
Asia Argento
This is a serious subject [at least to me].
They are rare.
This goes for screenwriters as well.
A survey found that 17% of stageplays produced last year were written by women.
A similiar survey beset Hollywood totaled 20%. I believe this merits discussion.
I make a big deal about this in my classes.
So I’m ready if anyone else is.
Lauren: I actually posted this because I started adding directors names to my profile and felt kind of depressed that they were pretty much all men. Generalising is a bit crap but I personally believe women are better at most things than men, men just shout louder. :)
Barbara Loden- “Wanda”
Chantal Ackerman
Quick to the point, 5 has it down, particularly with (and I’ve discussed outside class with my teachers) his very last point. My script analysis teacher (a woman) and I discussed “kitchen dramas” (her term). This type of story, purportedly submitted most by women, is of the first to get placed to back burners. But what is American Beauty, Reservation Road, seemingly “get-me-the-hell-out-this-life” stories. What about The Hours? Why are these “kitchen dramas” that are written by men getting more attention?
5 broke it down very well in regards to the studio system.
But what about the audience? The filmgoer. The theater patron. The avid reader.
I’d like to go backwards, even further, deeper. Particularly 5’s earlier points.
This is why colleges have Female Studies. And I know I haven’t said much. I can only type so fast.
Serve.
I have Agnes Varda on my profile OF COURSE.
A subject I’ve been working on for awhile. I want to see Coline Serreau’s Chaos soon.
Catherine Breillat, Catherine Corsini, French directors I really like.
Maya Deren
Dorothy Arzner from the silent/Golden Hollywood Era
Lois Weber, also from the silent era
Penelope Spheeris, Tamra Davis, Catherine Breillat, Katherine Bigelow, Debbie Allen…
Let’s not forget Barbara Streisand…
Also, Alice O’Fredericks was a very prolific Swedish filmmaker, who worked from the 30’s to the late 60’s.
Claire Denis is my favorite female director, and probably one of my favorite directors of all time. I have also become a fan of Vera Chytilová (Daisies, Fruits of Paradise), who made avant-garde films during the Czech New Wave; the women of the Makhmalbaf family are doing great work too (Samira and Marzieh), and I hope they can produce more in the future.
Miranda july.
Julie Taymor
Maya Deren
Sofia Coppola
Asia Argento
Arantxa Aguirre
!!!!!
For purity’s sake I promise that I am NOT looking at other people’s messages or looking on the Internet.
Agnes Varda — I’ll be honest and say I can’t name one off the top of my head.
Leni Riefenstahl (Olympia)
Martha Coolidge (I’m pretty sure she includes Fast Times At Ridgemont High in her resume)
Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days)
Barbra Streisand (Prince of Tides)
Penelope Spheeris (The Decline And Fall Of Western Civilization Part 2: The Heavy Metal Years — the most kick ass AND most poignant rock and roll documentary ever.)
Amy Heckerling — Clueless. But did she also direct FT@RH? I’m gonna keep Martha Coolidge as my answer on that one.
and I also know women directed the following: The Brady Bunch Movie, A Very Brady Sequel, the remake of The Parent Trap starring young LiLo. And I also know not only was it the same woman. And I also know she played a beat cop on Hill Street Blues. I know everything about her except her name. ARGHHHHHHH! God it’s like a sneeze and I can’t quite get it out. Looks like I"m off to the IMDB.
Nobody’s mentioned Chantal Akerman?
Well, crap. Amy Heckerling directed FT@RH. And, oohhh, Betty Thomas did direct The Brady Bunch Movie, but not the sequel and not Parent Trap, which was directed by Nancy Meyers.
And Very Brady Sequel was directed by Arlene Sanford.
I hate to just add a name to the list without adding to the conversation, but that’s all the time I have:
Kelly Reichardt
Holy shit one that hasn’t been named Gillian Armstrong! Mimi Leder, Barbara Kopple, Barbara Streisand:)
Sofia Coppola
Lynne Ramsey
Asia Argento
Penny Marshall
Penelope Spheeris
Mary Harron
Maya Deren
Catherine Hardwicke
Thats all I know……
bojkowski
Preferably those that have made more than one film.
I’m struggling, there must be loads more out there…

— Miranda July
— Sarah Polley
— Mary Harron
