I think it’s true—how could it not be—at least to some degree. But my sense is that people use the phrase to rebut the auteur theory. Personally, when said in this context, I don’t find the phrase to be very compelling, mainly because I don’t think of the auteur theory excludes collaboration among the filmmakers.
This seems to come up here every few months in one form or another. Not a whole lot to say. This days, one can easily make a film without collaborating with anyone, though it probably would look and feel a little different from the films that most people are used to seeing. And yes, even diehard auteurists realize that there are other people on set with the director.
I agree with the statement in that typically one cannot make a film without the involvement of another person
