I wonder that myself. Ebert had a couple movies from 2008 in his best of 09 lists I think. I don’t know if they just consider whenever they see it in theaters is the year they place it in or what.
I think most American sources use the American release date, rather than the original one.
Critics typically do “best of” lists based on when the film played in their city.
-can ‘a prophet’ potentially be nominated for the oscars this year due to its late release date?-
It was France’s submission for “Best Foreign Language” films for 2009, so it would not be eligible this year. For the “Best Foreign” Oscar, the date used is the film’s release date in the submitting country. For a film to be eligible for 2010, I believe it would have to be released in the submitting country between October 1, 2009 and September 30, 2010.

indie wire has ‘a prophet’ as one of their best reviewed films of 2010 so far. even though i viewed the film in early 2010, i was under the impression that this film was released in 2009. so i have few or so questions regarding release dates.
1. what exactly determines a film’s technical release date and what year it can be considered for awards (oscars etc)? i have often been confused by this because many film fall on the line and different sources regard them in different years.
2. can ‘a prophet’ potentially be nominated for the oscars this year due to its late release date?
