Maybe this is too obvious, but other Polish (Polish-born, that is) filmmakers—Roman Polanski, Andrzej Wajda, Jerzy Skolimowski, Agnieszka Holland, Andrzej Żuławski, etc.
The German director Tom Tykwer also comes to mind. He’s clearly inferior to Kieslowski, and “Run Lola Run” is a random commercialized pop version of “Blind Chance”, but at least “Heaven” which was a direct adaptation of a Kieslowski/Piesiewicz script comes close to the Polish master’s subtle filmmaking style (as long as one can ignore Tykwer’s blatant symbolism).
