Films about Islands

Owen Black

Hi folks. I’m doing some film research and trying to dig up the greatest aerial shots of cool islands out there. Tropical islands are best but, which films do y’all suggest?

here’s my start

The Beach, 2000 Danny Boyle
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, 2004 Wes Anderson
The Day of the Dolphin, 1973 Mike Nichols
The Man With the Golden Gun, 1974 Guy Hamilton

HAL 9000

Cast Away Robert Zemeckis
Lord of the Flies

The Island – Michael Bay
The Island – Pavel Lungin

This Island Earth (Dir. Joseph M. Newman, 1955)

I didn’t think it was awful, but the people at Mystery Science Theatre 3000 did. They use it for their feature film.

Wouldn’t anything British be “about islands?”

“No film is an island”

Serious suggestion:

Stromboli (Dir. Roberto Rossellini, 1950)

Probably the best movie about being on an island.

All islands can be filmed, but not all films can be islanded. Or something like that. I’m very drunk.

Damn, i should have kept my Islands in the Sun list, but i was feeling down, and it was awkward to maintain and keep a decent standard

Contempt
Song of Ceylon
I am Cuba
Outcast of the Islands
Rue Cases Negres
Mississippi Mermaid
I Walked with a Zombie
Twenty Four Eyes
Lucia
Goto Isle of Love

Hell in the Pacific
The Rock
Alcatraz
Joe versus the volcano
Robinson Crusoe (Luis Bunuel)
Too late the hero
Jurassic Park & its sequels
Lost World (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

& Oh yes, not to forget the awesomest TV shows ever – The Prisoner. Future Boy Conan.

I am guessing in a way Waterworld counts as well

Dr No
Peter Pan
Shutter Island
Guns of Navarone
King Kong
Shipwrecked
Jason & the Argonauts
Expendables

Treasure Island
The Tempest (any adaptation that suits you better)

Also, look up these:
any of the Pirates films
Most of the James Bond films are mostly on an island at some point.
Sinbad films,
Greek mythological films or the Peplum films
Godzilla movies

BTW, the thread is already one year old, surely by now Owen Black’s done with his homework.
Nice list nonetheless.
