I honestly don’t know of any films that have yet to come out that I think might make my Best of the Decade list. I might be forgetting some decent films but nothing that I’ve heard of sounds so remarkable that it would make my list.
However I can tell you that these films from 2009 are making my best of the decade list and I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen these films to check them out:
Where the Wild Things Are
Antichrist
The Baader Meinhof Complex
Still Walking
City of Life and Death
Too many to count. Still haven’t seen near what I wanted to from 2009. Hurt Locker, Moon, Antichrist, The White Ribbon… I’ve been watching too many old films.
You can never watch too many old films. I want to see A serious Man, and Ponyo.
I compiled this list one month ago:
Brand Upon the Brain! (2006)
Colossal Youth (2006)
Devils on the Doorstep (2000)
The Duchess of Langeais (2007)
Elephant (2003)
Flight of the Red Balloon (2008)
Goodbye Dragon Inn (2003)
In Praise of Love (2001)
Karamazovi (2008)
L’Enfant (2005)
Millennium Mambo (2001)
Mysterious Object at Noon (2000)
Notre Musique (2004)
One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich (2000)
The Piano Teacher (2001)
Private Fears in Public Places (2006)
The Proposition (2005)
Regular Lovers (2005)
Russian Ark (2002)
The Saddest Music in the World (2003)
Songs from the Second Floor (2000)
The Story of Marie and Julien (2003)
Syndromes and a Century (2006)
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Tropical Malady (2004)
What Time Is It There? (2001)
The World (2004)
Yi Yi (2000)
One month later and I have a lot more to add. I’ll never be able to compile my best of 2000s list.
In the Mood for Love
Gomorrah
The Orphanage
Grizzly Man
Encounters at the End of the World
Moon
District 9
Frozen River
The Fall
La Vi en Rose
Hamlet 2
The Hurt Locker
Elephant
Man on Wire
In the Loop
Ponyo
Ballast
Hunger
The Good, the Bad and the Wierd
LAw: I won’t either because I will only have seen like 100 films from it.
By these rigorous standards no lists will ever be able to be compiled. Then what will we have – dogs and cats living together – chaos!
What standards???
>> I have a lot more to add. I’ll never be able to compile my best of 2000s list.<<
>>I won’t either because I will only have seen like 100 films from it.<<
I think lists are mostly useless except for getting people to see your no.1 film, so on a theoretical level I willl never be able to compile a list. But eventually, because I want people to see the fantastic Tale of Cinema, I will still compile one anyway.
uuummm…..watch 3 films from each country of the world, and one will be able to compile an exemplary 2000’s list…
not a definite but at least exemplary…that is until he/she sees more from various countries, hehe.
One would need at least ten more years watching 1-2 films of this decade a day (which means about 5000 titles) in order to compile a random “best of decade” list. Obviously nobody is qualified to make an objective “best of” list, so that one should rather talk about a “list of some personal favorites from this decade”. Some of those many films I would be interested to see as soon as I get the chance are
About Elly
Enter the Void
The White Ribbon
Spring Fever
Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly
Women Without Men
Night and Day
Shirin
24 City
Brad S.
No direspect, but Hamlet 2? Really??
I’m doing like 1-2 films a day. I think I will be relatively satisfied to make a list by January.
Nicole, what can I say? I heard it was very funny. Maybe it won’t be, but I’d like to find out.
Slumdog Millionaire and Let The Right On In are on my list. White Ribbon too. Dying to see that one.
mine is a single man and white Ribbon. I feel that I have watched so many films this year that I can make a complete list.
A lot of people have already listed the films that I also need to see before making a best of 2000s list, so I will throw in Revanche.
No one can make a complete best of this decade list without having seen All About Lily Chou-Chou first.
Anybody who includes Revanche in their top films of the decade needs to be taken out back to the woodshed and spanked.
anyone who still thinks Tony Gilroy is a good director and mocks Godard at the same time, knows nothing about cinema…
Pretty much everything in the last 6 to 7 months. I’ve fallen behind quite badly
Brad – It’s really not. It’s all but terrible, but honestly if I were you I wouldn’t listen to me anyway. Lol. So feel free to see for yourself.
One movie I’m getting more and more excited about is The Road, it looks amazing, and also The Book of Eli, but I think that comes out early next year.
I seem to have a fondness for post apocalyptic cinema. Hahaha.
and Up In The Air looks great too.
Although I’m not sure if any of these will be best decade worthy, just reallllly worth seeing.
I was right ^ Lol
trash humpers
Talk To Her
Atanarjuat
Crimson Gold
Edge Of Heaven
Platform
Eureka
The return
The Experiment
Ghostworld
Still Life
Ten
Yi Yi
L’Enfant
It’s interesting that two years ago I felt like I was watching too MANY movies from this decade at expense of previous decades. Now I feel like I’m behind with the present, too!
AAAAAAArrrrrgggghhhh!!!
(This is why I ultimately decide to watch whatever the hell I want when I want. Any attempt at systemic watching of just about anything fails miserably, and usually quite rapidly.)

With the end of the decade and the onslaught of “best of 2000’s” approaching, what films do you plan to see before making such lists?
Gomorrah, Let the Right One In, and Donnie Darko are on tap this week for me…
