‘’Éloge de l’amour’’
The deceivingly uninspiring and charmless b/w present vs the deceivingly courageous and colored past…
Two recent films:
Somers Town ending, the switch from 16mm B/W to 8mm color is really neat.
Kisses did a really neat job, start and finish are in B/W with the stunning lights of Dublin shot in color.
Lady Vengeance. It’s a progressive shift and it’s more of a gimmick which reveal the limits of Chan-wook Park’s conception. The movie is easily the least of the Vengeance trilogy, lacking the emotional gut punch of the other two.
Rumble Fish

Tetro, Picture of Dorian Gray, Wings of Desire
Here’s another one that came to me last night: Kenneth Branagh’s DEAD AGAIN.
a man and a woman
Mirror
Stalker
Pleasantville :)
Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It.
A Matter of Life and Death does it better than any other film ever.
The Coins of the Sailor (1983) Raoul Ruiz
oops dp
Three Crowns, of course…it’s been over a year since I saw it! .. great shifting between gorgeous colour and B&W

@ALLY THE MANIC LISTMAKER:
Thanks for reminding me about the dramatically and visually significant B/W to color to B/W shifts in BONJOUR TRISTESSE. As that is one of my favorite Preminger films, I can’t believe I forgot to list it myself.
