Finally, Grindhouse to DVD

Leave it alone, haters. From Ed Wright’s twitter:

“So, get this, tomorrow I am doing a commentary on ’Don’t’. Some of you will know what that means is finally happening.”

Good. I never understood why they didn’t release it all in its entirety the first time around on DVD. It was a very fun pop concept.

That’s how I saw it in theaters. It was fun, but the faux trailers were the best part, especially Don’t.

Dr. Szell

^ definitely. the coming attractions and theater spots, all that stuff.

This is exciting news! I was disappointed that more people didn’t see it in theaters. I think Don’t and Thanksgiving were my favorite faux trailers.

I also think it’s cool that Rodriguez is turning Machete into a real movie.

Don’t and Thanksgiving were my favourites as well. While not a great “film” by any means, Grindhouse is better shown like it was in theatre, unbroken with the trailers. Why they’re just now coming around to finally releasing it like this on DVD is confusing.

Deck—cause they made so much more money selling them individually. Now they’ll triple dip it DVD and Blu (of course, I won’t be buying this).

Jake Mulligan

I’d imagine it’s being prepared to cross promote with whatever the hell they decide to do with “Machete”.

This is good news, but begs the question – When the hell are the Kill Bill special editions coming out?!?!

I saw the whole thing in theaters as well and it was wonderful. It’s better as a whole than the sum of it’s parts, for sure. I wouldn’t particularly care to see just one of the features or to leave out the trailers, which were probably one of the better parts of the entire presentation.

I can’t wait. I have Planet Terror and Death Proof on dvd but I’ve been dying to have the entire Grindhouse version on blu ray forever. I still remember seeing it opening night, I flew solo and sat in the very front row. No one else was even in the front section. I felt like it was my own private screening. I’ll always see that as one of the best theater experiences of my life.

Also, very excited for Machete.

Machete’s the only part of Grindhouse I’m that interested in seeing again.

NEONBEAR

That’s too bad.

Great news, but I want the complete version of Kill Bill more.

I’m actually kind of dreading the release of the new Machete. The new trailer isn’t nearly as good as the old one, it looks new like it was filmed on an HD camera, without the old gritty look. I’m expecting to be dissapointed.

deckard croix

^ I agree. Rodriguez is obsessed with HD. I remember watching a clip on youtube where Rodriguez attempts to convince John Carpenter that digital is a better medium than film and it’s hilarious to see Carpenter’s hugely skeptical expression (he hardly speaks and just nods and kinda smiles) … good stuff.

Machete did look great in the trailer in Grindhouse, but I know Rodriguez will fuck something up with his control-freakiness in the final product.

I just added the extended single release of DEATHPROOF to my queue, and I’m eager to see it in its non-grindhouse fomat. But thrilled too that I can compare the two versions now, with the visual distortion as well.

Hidden Behind the Screen

It’s quite possible that HD is an easier, cheaper and more conveniant way to make films, but when you’re trying to make a film that is like something out of the 70’s, I don’t see how you’d even consider it an option…

Hidden Behind the Screen

And I hate how he cast big name actresses for it. I would rather have had him keep all the original people from the trailer.

deckard croix

@Ben: Aw man. I saw the extended version of Death Proof and it really ruined my take on the film. The only ‘extension’ the film attempts is by filling in the “scene missing” edits … and I think it was a good decision on Tarantino’s part to leave those scenes out in the theatrical version.

Ben Simington

Yeah, I actually found myself thinking in the theater, “How could he have the nerve to release an even longer version of this?” But that was back when I kind of thought Tarantino wasn’t worth a tinker’s damn. Now that’s changed. I’m still curious to compare the two versions, and I’m curious to compare the experience of watching a longer GRINDHOUSE on its own with the experience of watching a shorter version that plays foil to PLANET TERROR.

But your warning has been duly noted, and not entirely unexpected…

Jake Mulligan

Nah Deckard, I’m not with you. The extended lapdance does SO much for the seedy, partyesque, exploitationy as shit feeling Death Proof needs – And Kurt Russell licking Rosario’s feet just WORKS, for some odd reason.

NEONBEAR

I don’t know. The new Machete trailer definitely doesn’t hold a candle to the Grindhouse version but I’m still into it. I think it probably will technically be a bad movie but I always have a spot in my film watching heart for some absurd films.

I will not relax my expectations until Werewolf Women of the SS actually exists in feature length—and Rob Zombie better fuckin’ hurry, ‘cause news on the streets sez Nic Cage ain’t that better for wear currently in the industry and who knows what further misfortunes might befall him has he any drug addictions, suicidal tendencies, etc….

Oh, but yes, I still refuse to buy Kill Bill until it’s The Whole Bloody Affair.

How dare you slander the Cage like that.

Bobby Wise

Random thought. Why did all of the trailers seem so much more interesting and promising as films than the actual features?

PolarisDiB

Jake: it’s not slander, it’s fact. Nic Cage did not pay handle his own money and did not pay attention to how his money handlers handled it, and as a result he is massively in debt and struggling very hard to pull himself afloat right now. That is partially why his career has gone downhill, as he has had next to no ability to reject any role offered him and of course, since his roles are increasingly less successful, it means it’s harder for him to get better and better paying roles. I’m saying that if he also happens to have any other issues, drug, emotional, or otherwise, he might not be around to act in such an awesome role as Fu Manchu in such an awesome movie as Werewolf Women of the SS.

And the reason why the trailers seemed more interesting than the films is the same reason why it’s so fun to buy a 50 movie horror pack for the titles on the back though it’s so hard to watch all of them: because The Joke is basically in the premise itself, and it’s harder to keep that joke going over a feature length.

Bobby, I don’t know. I actually still find Death Proof the most interesting idea of all of them. Planet terror could be the weakest though but mainly because it’s premise was simple, but I though well done. Honestly it would have been incredible if like Tarantino/Rodriquez, Wright and Zombie too made a 2nd grindhouse making full length features of their faux trailers. Set a tradition of two unique directors making grindhouse double features. It would go on like Grindhouse 1, 2, 3, 4, ect.
