Je connais un peu de Francais, mais je ne le parle jamais. Si une belle langage. Je traduit la poesie et les romans parfois de Francais en Anglais. Cependant je ne sais pas si je peut converse fluently, sans la phrase Anglais parfois. C’est difficile pour moi.
Ich rede ein bischen Deutsch auch. Ich habe gelernt das aus Kino.
Excellente idée, je seconde, je n’ai pas beaucoup de temps pour the auteurs mais j’adore.

I don’t know how I would like to go about it. By adding the possibility of posting blogs in French (Spanish, German, Russian and Italian might come later), I believe you can add untold thousands of visitors and members. Perhaps I am mistaken, and perhaps you don’t want them. In any case, this could create problems for management, and the site. To some extent, I already regret having posted my “invitation.” I should have run it past a senior person at the site first.
I, personally, can answer blogs in reasonably good French, but I sure don’t want to answer all of them and I am not qualified to answer all of them.
I believe this could get out of hand fast, obligating the site to launch a new, French-language site. Management may not want to do that.
My original notion was that Francophones (that is, French-speaking people) would communicate with one other. Surely, this site is read by French-Canadians as well as by the French. The French are wild cinephiles – they invented the word. But native French-speakers will have NO interest in chatting with people who are not fluent in their language. A few words of American high-school French they don’t need.
If management doesn’t care for this, I would suggest they delete my invitation.
If an all-French area isn’t launched, then French-language blogs will be sprinkled through English-language blogs and that could become messy, and upset the Anglophones.
“Justin”, above, has epitomized the matter – he wants very much to post blogs but he fears he can’t communicate well in English.
I think this is a good idea, if the site wants to attract many, many new, foreign members. Remember – French is the language of cinema and ballet, as Italian is the language of music!
There are already several enthusiastic Francophones here, a couple of hours after I posted the invitation, as well as an interested German. The interest is certainly out there.
Needless to say, interested Francophones have to be able to read English-language blogs to which they might care to respond. In most cases, they won’t be able to do that, and Anglophone members wouldn’t be able to answer in French.The French are very rarely fluent in English.
I am hoping someone in management might read this. Tell’ em to hire me to set up their foreign-language wing!

This is an interesting area. Anything that broadens the scope of the site has to be a good thing, and given the prominence of English and French in the world it seems like a good move, as it will potentially open up ideas and opinions that would otherwise be unheard in a mono-lingual site. But I see the logistical problem, and we wouldn’t want it to become at all divisive or see enclaves forming.
We could always take a Montreal-style approach i.e. switching from Fr to Eng and back again from sentence to sentence ;)
I can speak both to at least reasonable standard, but I know my written French is peppered with errors that would make a native French speaker wince (to put it mildly), hence this post in English.
I’ll watch how this develops with real interest… a very interesting topic to bring up, Gordon.

No, I am not in management. In fact, I just joined the auteurs a few days ago. I was merely asking how you wanted to go about incorporating French into the mix: should we write in French, should we post articles/reviews of interest that may be in French, etc. I agree that having some way to allow a multiplicity of languages on the site could be productive and allow for more participation and you are accurate in saying that the French have a long tradition of filmmaking and film appreciation (as well as do other countries whose languages are not represented by the site). But this could also be a hugh undertaking…
In the meantime, we could just write in French about French films?
…Gordon, what planet are you on?? The French (like every other non-Anglo people in the world) have NO CHOICE but to speak the omnipresent and omnipotent language of our time, English, and every educated French person speaks English at least acceptably.
As someone who has both cultures in equal parts and has lived equally in the US and France, I can certify that the rate of anglophone French to francophone Anglos must be about 10 to 1.
À part ça, oui, ton projet pourrait être intéressant.

English is a reasonably easy language for people(s) – German, Scandinavians, the Dutch – whose native tongue is within the Germanic-language groups. But English pronunciation is difficult for people whose native tongue is a Latin or Romance language – French, Italian, Spanish, notably – or Japanese. Perhaps you agree. Italians have a particular problem with English pronunciation – I think Italian people will tell you that. My experience is that the French have a good deal of difficulty with English. You may well know better.
As I suggested in my first posting on this topic, I should have run it past the management before inviting foreign-language speakers in here.Don’t you think it might cause havoc and get out of hand?
Why don’t you and I try to answer French postings, if any? Problem is, we don’t know where they will be. And, of course, there may be none.

J’ai lu que tu étais forcé d’arreté ton travail au cause des problemes économiques, mais j’ai aussi fait attention quand tu as dit qu’avec une histoire forte l’argent n’est pas un obstacle. Comme tu veux faire un film avec “beaucoup d’argent,” pourquoi pas finir ce que tu as déja commencé? Hollywood ne peut pas être considéré comme obstacle parce que, même selon toi, le mode conventionel de faire les films est mort. Ça veut dire que les sujets non-traditionnels sont maintenant ouverts pour exploration. Je dirai quand même que sans une expérience plus profonde de la pédophilie, je vois pas comment on peut faire une critique qui sera plus qu’un commentaire surface. J’imagine que la plupart des tentatives à discuter la pédophilie par des gens manquant de l’epérience résultent en l’exploitation de la curiosité morbide des gens. Laisse-moi suggérer que peut-être tu ferais mieux dans le business que dans le cadre artistique…
Jenny – Je suis journalist – je fais mes recherches et puis mes reportages, sur n’importe quel sujet. Je ne suis pas soldat mais j’etais quand meme correspondant de guerre pendant deux ans. Je ne suis pas chef d’etat mais j’ecrivais des centaines d’articles sur la politique.C’est rare que je fais des “commentaires.” My pedophile book was based almost entirely on interviews, with pedophiles, psychiatrists, sociologists etc. Je suis bien reconaissant pour vote lettre. Gordon – oui c’est parfaitement acceptable de communiquer en français sur le site, en fait c’est encouragé. Nombreuses des cinephiles et cinéastes sur le site viennent de Canada et France, en particulier Québec et Paris. Evidemment il existent des différences entre les formes du français utilisés ici, soit grammatique, soit dans les nuances de l’argot - par example, les parisiens sur le site parlent souvent en verlan, ce qui peut etre on peu déroutant. Mais bien sûr parle le français si tu veux. The Auteurs est un site international - tu trouveras aussi l’espagnol dans les forums de temps en temps. Je suis autorisé à te dire ces choses parce que je suis de l’équipe dirigeante : en addition d’être dirigant de l’école des films ici, je suis aussi un modérateur du forum et c’est mon job de garder un œil sur les agressions et les transgressions dans l’ordre des choses. J’attends avec impatience de voir tes interactions sur le site.
