i am serious you know ,was it a rational act or not?
Um, so why did you buy an EU-region DVD exactly? If you don’t speak French, then yes, that was not sensible. On the other hand, some movies are pretty easy to follow if you only have a limited linguistic capability…
The Criterion Collection has an edition of French Cancan, and it’s online I believe…
Yeah deffinately shoulda checked Criterion first. Is it too late to cancel the order?
It does have English subtitles – according to DVD Beaver…

thanks for the link bugsy! it appears that only the supplementary material is not subtitled.
well, i hope that makes you slightly less depressed.
It’s a truly lovely film
I just wanted to recommend Renoir’s “stage and spectacle” trilogy (French CanCan, The Golden Coach, Elena and Her Men) to everybody. It’s the equal of anything he did in the 1930s.
…just make sure you don’t order French-Canadian Cancan. Not. Amusing.
Or worse yet, the French-Polynesian Cancan. Unless you like depravity..
The French-Polynesians are at least sexy. French-Canadians have an irritating accent and are all white and pasty from the constant cold weather and little sun.
Brady??! …this is probably closest French Polynesians get to anything CanCan
Yeah, it was a joke, I couldn’t think of any other French countries.
Lovely dancing, though.
@Nohea: My point exactly. The French-Canadian national dance (if ever there were one) includes snow shoes. Thankfully, I come from the other side of the continent. As far away as you can get.
liam allen is slightly depressed
i have just ordered the gaumont region b blue ray of renoirs french cancan even though it is not english friendly (no subtitles) purely on the basis of its screen caps. was this a sensible thing to do?( is it possible to appreciate a film as a series of almost abstract images)
