Whatever he does, I honestly think he succeeds best with his own material from the ground up. Jackie Brown was perfectly suited for him, and he made it his own. Great Adaptation etc. But still lacks some of the charm of his own “stories”.
Of these, I’d throw out the adaptations, the spin-offs and the docu – biopics (though anything starring him should be hilarious ((though not necessarily good)))
That leaves gangster and Romantic comedy. Gangsters too classic, and too close to Inglorious for a follow up. So i guess i’d like to see a Romantic Comedy the most out of the list.
I vote for retirement
I really only noticed it with Basterds, but Tarintino’s schtick is really getting old. Most because it’s now become recognizable.
I remember watching Pulp Fiction and thinking “Wow, I’ve never seen a film like this before”. (Of course I had never seen the films he was ripping off, but we’ll leave that aside for now)
With Basterds, it just became clear. He has the Tarintino thing that he does, and puts it into a new situation.
I would kind of like to see the Harvey Weinstein biopic or the romantic comedy. Just to see if he can handle real people doing things, and to find out if he could make something interesting out of it.
^^I got that feeling about Deathproof actually, and if i’m being honest with myself, Kill Bill 2 as well.
I haven’t seen Inglorious Basterds, but miy problem with Tarantino in the 00’s is that he was unable, IMO, to blend his influences into something that felt ‘new’. Kill Bill to me just felt like a Frankenstein, and maybe that was the intention, but he has lost the ability to make something feel new and novel, like he did in the 90’s.
he takes fun genre films and makes them talky and unwatchable.
He should make a mumblecore film then he would be in his element
his styie also feels really dated to me. maybe the critics love him because they normally wouldn’t like that sort of thing but can accept it because he is ‘clever’ and ‘ironic’ and ‘cool’ and it makes them feel hip and ‘with it’ or something. who knows. or maybe they genuinely enjoy his films. either way i’m surprised people haven’t got tired of him by now. He was ‘cool’ in the 90’s for about 15 minutes but get over it already. Even ‘Jackie Brown’ felt stale to me. the last 30 mins reminded me of ‘Get Shorty’ except G.S was better. and yes i realise they were both adapted from E.L novels but whatever. It just felt tired to me.
Joks, I think you’re right. I was still denying to myself at that time that he wasn’t a genius. Now when you watch Reservoir Dogs, you can see he was just doing the Tarintino thing to robbery movies.
It won’t be long before he makes an absolute stinker the critics savage him for, and the Tarintino shtick will get old for everyone. The movie he makes after this stage, though, is one I’d be interested in seeing.
I don’t think the mumblecore movement would want his over-the-tops stylistics.
“It won’t be long before he makes an absolute stinker the critics savage him for,”
If IB and DP werent those stinkers then I hate to see how much worse it gets
“It won’t be long before he makes an absolute stinker the critics savage him for, and the Tarintino shtick will get old for everyone. The movie he makes after this stage, though, is one I’d be interested in seeing.”
‘Death Proof’ got very mixed reviews i think. Grindhouse bombed too. If I.B bombed, his career would have been in trouble, but no, the fucker had to gross over 300 million at the worldwide box office didn’t it? ;-)
I almost fell asleep during Inglourious Basterds… I thought the film was supposed to be entertaining. It doesn’t get any more indulgent than the conversation with the film critic who namedrops Pabst a lot.
A quick check shows that Basterds got 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Grindhouse got 82%.
It’ll take something particularly awful to get the critics to break away from the groupthink about Tarantino.
well then I guess (to answer the OP) he should do John Brown bio starring himself
I think Basterds is his best film and I would like to see any of those other film ideas except a prequel to bastards.
the greatest telling of the John Brown story has already been done:
Orr my point was that it would be so bad it would knock him down a couple pegs
“A quick check shows that Basterds got 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Grindhouse got 82%.”
Grindhouse was the experience though. Death Proof has 64% on R.T. Worst reviews of his career at that point.
I agree that because of I.B though, ti’s going to take a REALLY bad film for them to change their minds.
Ah Den in that case I’m all for it.
Yes many people would be upset that it would forever spoil the story, but sometimes you’ve just got to pay that price.
what ever he going to do i’ll not watch it
Tarantino has went on record numerous times saying he wants to retire from filmmaking when he hits 60. I’m counting down the days..As for his next film hopefully he makes an epic that will take out a good chunk of the 14 years remaining until he does hit the 60 mark. Now that’s a bingo.
Glad to see that this thread, as many threads do, really only digressed down to the point where a hand full of people are bashing what the thread is about.
From what I understand about Tarantino, he is making Kill Bill 3 with the idea that he will release it on the exact day 10 years after kill bill 2 was released… and the story starts off with “10 years later”.
He’s waiting for the little black girl from Kill Bill to be 19 so he can make the story about her seeking revenge against the bride. Until then he said he wants to make a Western.
The above list doesn’t mention the “Southern” that he’s talked about occasionally. The idea, for him anyway, is that we have all these genre films based on historical time periods (Westerns, WWII films…), and he’s proposed making a genre film based in the South during pre-Civil War times. Somehow he would give the genre a set of its own unique conventions and codes.
This could be either really interesting or really interesting in a horrible way. I hope he does it.
the Harvey Wienstien doc could be good.
OTher than retiring,
I for one would like to see him try a romantic comedy to see if he could actually make a film without exploitative violence.
I think he said if he directed a romantic comedy, it would be in the same vein as True Romance, so there would still be the exploitative violence. I think the “southern” can really go either way, but that sounds like the only possible project I would be interested in watching. The thought of a third Kill Bill makes me shudder a little, I thought Tarantino had got Uma Thurman out of his system and he would stop filming her feet. Now we’ll see them aged a whole decade. Ewww!
Just do a Kill Bill 3 he needs to go out with a bang. I wana see a death match between Beatrix and Zombie Bill :)
IngBas is absolutely fantastic. Needs no prequel as far as I’m concerned. Nor does Kill Bill need a third installment. Now, a Jules Winfield sequel to Pulp? YES!!!! lol
What ever happened to Vega Brothers?
He should really stick to the Pulp Fiction universe.
Most of the actors from Pulp Fiction are to old to play the same characters they already did. but Samuel L. Jackson’s character is still alive at the end of the film and maybe there is a story out there for him.
Jack Lineman
So Tarantino dose a lot of talking about future films he may direct and usually years ahead of the project even being written. So here is the list of projects that he is “currently” thinking about making. He is also saying that he will quit directing film when he gets to 60 years of age and then write all of his stories as novels and write film criticism. So what do you guys out there think about the ideas for films that Tarantino is thinking about?
