“Milk” and “Heavenly Creatures”
Mr. Peabody (and where’s Sherman these days?) your post makes no sense whatsoever.
lol….
That´s what I like most about Mr. R. W. Peabody the third´s comments.
“Aimee and Jaguar” is my favorite LGBT film of all time. I think everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, should see this film as it is a wonderful story about the power of love and overcoming odds in its name.
A lot of good films listed here, but a few I don’t see…
“Beautiful Thing” is a poignant, wonderful coming-of-age queer movie about two working-class boys in love. “Ma Vie en Rose” from Belgium is a funny, excellent film about a little boy who wants to be a girl. It’s a really challenging subject handled incredibly well and simply. “Boy Don’t Cry” is really well made and well acted, but kind of brutal and difficult to watch. And I love “Trick” but it’s hardly a great film.
They’ve been mentioned but are worth mentioning again: “Maurice,” “The Wedding Banquet,” and “Longtime Companion” are all exquisite films. I loved “Wild Reeds” when it came out, but I barely remember it now. And I agree with the person that said “Kissing Jessica Stein” is delightful.
I recently watched “Another Country” again after many years and was a little disappointed. But it is fun to see young Rupert Everett, Cary Elwes, and Colin Firth acting like school boys in love with each other.
Does “The Object of My Affection” count as a gay film? Another not-great film that I really love for some reason.
No one mentioned the Canadian queer filmmaker, John Greyson. His movies are a little rough around the edges, but are a pomo take on the queer thang. There’s “Lilies” which is based on a play, “Proteus” which is a historical piece and a few others whose names I can’t recall at the moment.
And also no one mentioned Fassbinder’s “In a Year with 13 Moons.” The main character undergoes a sex change because he is in love with a man, though he has been hetero up until then. All this happens long before the film starts, so it’s more of a study of transexuality.
“The Object of My Affection” deinitely counts. The author of the original novel and the director of the film are gay. And Wendy Wasserstein was a Big Ol’ Fag-Hag.
John Greyson is a God — and One Fabulous Babe!
I’ve actually thought about doing the play “Lilies.” It’s awfully sentimental and of the up-with-queer-down-with-intolerance school, but I love the theatricality of the prisoners putting on a revenge play. Though I think I’d like to see it done a little darker—literally and in the atmosphere of the prison.
Though I think “Lilies” is one of the best gay films of the 90’s, it is a bit prettified to my taste. However, I love that he retained the theatricality, and how he broke it open into film by removing the top of the confessional, revealing the hot-air balloon—a nice shot. And I think Brent Carver’s performance as the mother is otherworldly, very closely felt, but just this side of camp. The movie at least had style—better than most gay films, then or now.

Maybe it was already mentioned, but the one I saw yesterday, Santiago Otheguy’s La León, is quite compelling.
You can ignore it because I can’t claim that van Sant is a secret heterosexual.
Gregg Araki was a closet heterosexual for about a year. He brought his girlfriend to a film event I put together and tried to pass her off as his sister or something.
Don’t think it has been mentioned yet; Nighthawks (1978)

Did you think it was just a phase the board was going through?
Greg thought he was Bi for awhile, but it was just a phase. Now he’s back to nailing hot punks.
There’s a new João Pedro Rodrigues at the New York Film Festival — “To Die Like a Man.” It’s about drag queens. Crazy about his “O Fantasma” — one of the horniest films ever made.
Taxi zum Klo, Un Chant D’amour, and Querelle, ftw. BRAD DAVIS AS A SAILOR AND FRANCO NERO AS A SEXUALLY REPRESSED GAY CAPTAIN = a masterpiece
And Fucking Amal and Heavenly Creatures are probably my most favorite lesbian movies.
Do you mean Gregg Araki? Or another user in this forum? XD
Ooohh, I want to watch O Fantasma. I’ve been searching for that movie for a while. And the fact that you just mentioned that it’s one of the horniest films ever made makes me want to watch it even more.
PARAGRAPH 175
THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
RED RIVER
LES VOLEURS
DEATH IN VENICE
A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
Netflix has O Fantasma. I don’t know why that film is so under the radar. It’s a good litmus test, seeing how friends react to it.

MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO and SHORTBUS are in my opinion, two of the best works of Gay and Lesbian cinema I’ve seen.
Lawrence of Arabia was pretty gay.

Your POV on Pickpocket is as valid as anyone else’s reading.
My point: a reading shouldn’t be taken outside the frame to the artist -
Guernica didn’t make Picasso a war monger.
