spartacus
Sensei: God, you stole the answer right out of my fingertips. I’ve always loved Spartacus best when it comes to movies set in that period.
Ben Hur.
Since I’ve seen it again on the Big Screen from a 70mm Print, it’s actually become one of my Top 100 favorite films. Sublime poetry.
With “Gladiator” I haven’t yet decided if I like it.
Ben Hur, for the chariot race if nothing else.
Nothing in Gladiator can approximate the climactic chariot race in Ben Hur. It is still on the short list of most incredible action sequences in film history. And nary a gigabyte of CGI.
Cheers,

They both stink.
I find Ben Hur to be maudlin. Heston is best when he’s the last man on Earth, not the most important and glorious of men on Earth (a generalization, I know, but still…).
Gladiator was really entertaining the first time I saw it, but it hasn’t really stood up to time.
Spartacus is pretty neat, but also uneven. I mean, of course it is, it was directed by how many different directors? There are some really strong moments and some weaker ones. It’s a very interesting movie, though, so worth viewing just for the reason of seeing the way that having multiple directors can affect a movie.
