Godard Pick...

I’m going to B&N for the 50% off sale today, but only want to pick up one film. It’s between Breathless, Made in USA, and 2 or 3 Things….

Any suggestions? I’m a huge fan of Pierrot le fou and Band of Outsiders if that helps. I was leaning toward Made in USA.

Thanks

You have not seen any of the three films?

I’ve seen Breathless.

2 or 3 Things is pretty unlike Breathless and Band of Outsiders, it is essentially an essay film. Have you seen Sans Soleil?

Try “Alphaville”, “Une Femme Mariee” or “A Woman Is A Woman” first before going on to the more difficult essay films. Have you not seen “Vivre Sa Vie”? See it.

Is Made in USA an essay film as well? From what I’ve read it doesn’t seem to be.

It might not correctly be called an essay film, but the allusiveness of its myriad references and its highly idiosyncratic structure makes it well-nigh impenetrable.

If you are a huge fan of “Band of Outsiders”, myself, I’d say your next stop is “Masculin/Feminin”

I’m a HUGE fan of “Made in USA”. I might have seen it 20 times by now! :)

2 or 3 things is JLG at his best, btw (60’s period).

Yeah, I agree with Christoper Sepesy. Who could get tired of Breathless?

Breathless for sure. I thought it was pretty obvious when first reading this thread

2 or 3 Things and Pierrot are both much better films than Breathless, I think.

If you can only get one for now, go with Breathless.

I’d say either 2 or 3 Things or Made in USA.

Partial to “Made in USA”.

I’d go for Week End for sure. Maybe, Vivre Sa Vie as a second option.

I screened Alphaville for my USC class last year and most of them didn’t get it—provocative and beautiful it was, but a tad creaky. I screened Breathless this year and it was fresh and spanking new, held up really well. And they loved it. I need to rescreen 2 or 3 Things, which was always my favorite.

Get “Made in USA.” It’s a masterpiece.

I second “In Praise of Love” – though that is not a Criterion one for sale. // I’ve a huge poster of this film in my room.
Folks at the Criterion – Thou arth being partial to 60’s JLG. Why oh why. :P

We all know that “2 or 3 Things” and “Made In USA” were filmed simultaneously, but it must be said nonetheless- Goddamn, what a feat.
