Good Performances in Subpar Films

A few days ago I watched Frears’ “The Hit” and I have to say that while the four main characters of the film (played by Terence Stamp, John Hurt, Tim Roth, and Laura del Sol, respectively) were all well played, I think the film fell flat. I felt that the film wasn’t very cohesive and it was inconsistently paced.

Can you think of any films where the actors performed well but the overall product was just average? How about the opposite, where the film was great despite some bad acting? Or, am I just totally wrong in my thoughts on “The Hit?”

I just put up a thread about this, sort of. It’s called “Do You Read The Onion?”

Anyway, to answer your question, you can just look over Meryl Streeps body of work. She has been in a few great movies, but doesn’t star in them (Adaptation aside).

^I second The Hit

Also Christopher Walken in Catch Me If You Can. He was fantastic but the film was just ok.

Thousands of movies. Actors are artists (maybe the most fascinating of all artists), and can transcend the material they are stuck with.

Philip Seymour Hoffman in Synecdoche
Johnny Depp in The Libertine
And Meryl Streep can do no wrong in whatever film she’s in.
