“I’m finished.”
@KELDON
What film is that from?
@Volupte: TWBB! (There Will Be Blood)
Fuck.
Eyes Wide Shut.
“All is grace.” – Diary of a Country Priest
“The horror. The horror.” – Apocalypse Now
“I know.” – Before Sunset
“Heard about the guy who fell off a skyscraper? On his way down past each floor, he kept saying to reassure himself: So far so good… so far so good… so far so good. How you fall doesn’t matter. It’s how you land! " – La Haine
“We have a 10-80 out here, a truck on fire, we have a man on the lift. We are unable to find the switch to turn the lift off, can’t stop the dancing chickens. Send an electrician, we’re standing by.” – Stroszek
“Die.”
Synecdoche, New York
@Poopbutt
That translation somehow ruins the style of La Haine’s final line, it sounds way better and less stupid in french… but however, it’s a great example of how to end a film.
“I’m an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a Schnook.” – Goodfellas
Sucks for me then :( Still, such a brilliant film, even in (subtitled) english.
Of course, i’m not saying that films should not be watched subtitled… The film is brilliant no matter which language the subtitles or dubbing is in, but in particular, that line’s translation made me think of it more as a comic line than what it is.
Is english your native language?
“Anything for the man who shot liberty valance.”
-The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
The look on their (Vera Miles and Jimmy Stewart) faces after this line is delivered is devastating.
No, my native language is spanish.
“And as we sat there listening to the carolers, I wanted to tell Brian it was over now and everything would be okay. But that was a lie, plus, I couldn’t speak anyway. I wish there was some way for us to go back and undo the past. But there wasn’t. There was nothing we could do. So I just stayed silent and trying to telepathically communicate how sorry I was about what had happened. And I thought of all the grief and sadness and fucked up suffering in the world, and it made me want to escape. I wished with all my heart that we could just leave this world behind. Rise like two angels in the night and magically disappear.”
- Mysterious Skin
Do you speak French, Santropez, or are you saying that the Spanish subtitle was much more profound than the English subtitle? Because if that is the case, I guarantee that the Finnish subtitle will blow you away.
“Shut up and deal” – The Apartment
@Leaves: Actually, I sort of agree with Santropez. I’ve never seen it subtitled, but if the line Poopbut mentioned was the real English subtitle (and not a vague on the spot translation) it seems a bit awkward. I think that line could definately be better forumated.
…and “tout est grâce” from Diary of a Country Priest is an excellent line.
“What’s a louse?” – BREATHLESS
“You wanna fuck with me?” – GHOST WORLD (store scene outtake after the credits)
“Everybody gets corrupted…” – MANHATTAN
Without giving away the actual final lines for any classic films, I’ll just list a few movies that have great closers, and if you’ve seen the films in question, you’ll know what I mean. If you haven’t, give ’em a go! The director for each film is credited in parentheses.

“Seven Samurai” (Akira Kurosawa, 1954).

“The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” (Sergio Leone, 1966).

“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (George Roy Hill, 1969).

“They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” (Sydney Pollack, 1969).

“A Clockwork Orange” (Stanley Kubrick, 1971).

“Dirty Harry” (Don Siegel, 1971).

“The Seduction of Mimi” (Lina Wertmüller, 1972)

“Magnum Force” (Ted Post, 1973).

“Soylent Green” (Richard Fleischer, 1973).

“Chinatown” (Roman Polanski, 1975)

“Network” (Sidney Lumet, 1976).

“Blue Collar” (Paul Schrader, 1978).

“The Club” (Bruce Beresford, 1980).

“Death Wish 2” (Michael Winner, 1982).

“Amadeus” (Milos Forman, 1984).

“Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” (Nagisa Oshima, 1983).

“Big Trouble In Little China” (John Carpenter, 1986).

“The Last Emperor” (1987)

“RoboCop” (Paul Verhoeven, 1987).

“The Lives of Others” (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2006).
“Suck my dick!” – I Spit on Your Grave
@Noel: way to butcher the Manhattan line bro. It’s “NOT everybody gets corrupted…”
Manhattan — the Woody Allen movie? Doesn’t that end with Woody and his on-and-off gf talking, and she says “you have to trust me” or something. And then Rhapsody in Blue kicks in and there’s a skyline and it’s over?
Am I remembering all this wrong?
“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca
@RACHELLEIGH: Great quote. I love The Apartment.
“Everybody dies.” John Garfield in Body and Soul.
“Mother of Mercy! Is this the end of Rico?”

- “Reading a book!”
- “Yes. It’s all about civilization or something, a nutty kind of a book. Do you know that the guy said that machinery is going to take the place of every profession?”
- “Oh, my dear, that’s something you need never worry about.”

“Positively the same dame.”

“All right Mr. De Mille, I’m ready for my close-up”
Sunset BLVD!
WEll you can shoot me in my black ass cause that’s the last part of me your going to see. Richard Pryor which way is up.
They shoot horses don’t they. They can fix anything. C’mom Jake, it’s chinatown. Beat me to it, Mark.
The Player: “Traffic was a bitch.”
@ELMER_FISHSTICKS @Noel: way to butcher the Manhattan line bro. It’s “NOT everybody gets corrupted…”
Oh, right. Well I actually prefer the former- the way I remember it ha-ha!
@ANTHONY Manhattan — the Woody Allen movie? Doesn’t that end with Woody and his on-and-off gf talking, and she says “you have to trust me” or something. And then Rhapsody in Blue kicks in and there’s a skyline and it’s over?
I know, I know that’s what the dot-dot-dot (…) is for I don’t exactly remember the last sentence word for word. I think it’s “…have a little faith in people” or something. Bloody hell!
