looks boring middle of the road late 90’s Van Sant to me.
doesn’t look too bad.
looks a bit tried + tested but Van Sant has a pass for life from me after My Own Private Idaho, and Sophie from In Treatment is so likeable I don’t need a good film to watch her perform. can’t believe that bland kid playing Harold 2.0 is a child of Hopper’s though.
Looks like fun.
What is with the music and the cheesyness of everything in that trailer? A story about a kamikaze-ghost seems great though.
It looks pretty bad, but the music is definitely a part of that. I can’t imagine the film’s tone will be anything like the trailer. Or at least I hope it isn’t, as I’m a big Van Sant fan and this looks like a pretty major step down. I wish he had continued the path he went on with the “Death trilogy” and Paranoid Park.
yea, trailer is unwatchable, but I usually enjoy Van Sant’s stuff. looking forward to seeing this!
Too bad Ruth Gordon isn’t around to play the romantic female lead.
Just an awful trailer, I’m assuming the film is quite a bit different then what it leads me to believe.
It seems like Gus is making Hollywood crap, now. I wish he would make some good stuff like Mala Noche and or My Private Idaho, hell ill even take Even Cowgirls get the blues, but this shit is in line with Finding Forester just more stylish, in fact its like Love Story for this generation. I guess he did Milk so now hes gotta do this one. One for him one for them.
Trailers do have a tendency to mislead.
Like has anyone seen the trailer The Fighter – I don’t think a David O. Russell film could be like how that trailer presents it.
But you never know, it might be.
This is the movie Sofia Coppola should have made instead of Somewhere.
unquestionably bad trailer but don’t bet against gus. he’ll bring it
Gus Van Sant needs to do a major studio superhero movie next!
I was lucky enough to see this at a test screening last spring and I can assure you, it’s one of Van Sant’s best films. It’s easily his best since Elephant (and that’s saying something, considering I love Paranoid Park) and it’s definitely in the vain of his more personal films like Last Days, My Own Private Idaho, and Elephant. I admit the trailer is absolutely terrible and makes the film out to be something that it’s not. The film is dark and heart breaking, with themes of death and mortality that is reminiscent of Harold & Maude. If this film was released this year, it would be definitely make my top ten.
Kristian Ramsden, you made a great point and so did the rest of you, I can tend to get harsh on Gus. I guess I will give this movie a shot.
I think Somewhere looks mighty interesting.
It does feel a little similiar to Harold And Maude, but just with a japanese ghost thrown in for fun! ;)

The story of a terminally ill teenage girl who falls for a boy who likes to attend funerals and their encounters with the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot from WWII.
