Any thoughts on the film? Just caught it and it will take a while to process it entirely. Obviously, much of the debate over the film hinges on what makes of the end. Flashback? Fantasy? No easy answers from Dumont. His best film since Humanité? Perhaps. Stylistically, it’s not quite as naturalistic and reflective as some of his other films but it definitely has a strong impact. It’s also quite surprisingly subdued – no bursts of extreme violence or sex.

I’ve wanted to see this for a while. Where did you see it, Ari? I suppose I can torrent it probably.

French DVD but it seems to be playing North American theaters as well. Yeah, it must be on torrents as well. Watch it so we can discuss it. There’s a lot going on in the film. It’s definitely Dumont’s most elliptical film (but at the same time seemingly most accessible one as well). As meditations on religious faith, fanaticism and insanity, It’s about as close to a Dreyer or Bresson film as I think possible to make today (even more so than Reygadas although he’s probably the contemporary filmmaker who most closely resembles Dumont). Dumont’s new film L’Empire, based on description at least, seems to be going in the same direction.
