Oh, come on Grey, choose a favorite Piccoli movie? Like that’s even possible given the amount of great ones he was in. I mean I think Death in the Garden, French Can Can, Contempt, Passion, Belle de jour, The Milky Way, Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Don’t Touch the White Woman, A Room in Town, Young Girls of Rochefort, The Duchess of Langeais, Danger Diabolik, and La nuit de Varennes are all pretty great, heck, I even like Topaz and Atlantic City and La Belle Noiseuse aren’t bad either. But I guess if I had to pick one, then I’ll go with Dillinger is Dead. It may not be my very favorite film of the group, but it is the most Piccoli-ee of the ones I really like. I still need to see the ones you’ve put up clips for though, so my choice is a provisional one.
“I’m Going Home” is a very special favorite of mine.
He is one of a kind. There is no one like him. Not Fernando Rey or Gene Hackman or Trevor Howard or Gunnar Bjornstrand (although he comes close) or Harry Dean Stanton or anyone else I can think of off the top of my head.
Sometimes actors enter into Piccoli’s sphere briefly to add dimension to their own performances, but they are unable to sustain it.
Happy Birthday to a master.
“La Grande Bouffe”…..could anyone else have pulled off an insanely flatulent man who does ballet excercises between meals and wears pink turtlenecks? And yet he is completely masculine as he plays it. Just effortless grace and elegance.
Happy 85th and many more to you, Monsieur Piccoli. And thank you for all your gifts to us.

Better late than never but Happy Birthday from me as well, monsieur Piccoli. Still quite a lot of titles to see from his work, and I guess if I have to pick a favorite role of his, it must be the first one in which I saw him – ‘’Belle de Jour’’…
Embodiment of perversion… can’t but be adored.:)
He is ageless. He is the greatest.
Grey Daisies
Happy 85th Birthday to one of the greatest actors there is.
