oy, damn typo
First movie I ever saw in theaters. I was three. Quite possibly the reason I love film today, and I still love it unreservedly.
Do I have to specify that I exclude the prequels from that statement? I didn’t think so.
Cheers.
The only one I love is Star Wars, the others are fine and still iconic, even the prequels.
When I was a kid I loved the first and third the best, but Empire became and remained my favorite.
Empire taught my generation about Tragedy in the dramatic sense.
They catapulted my creativity unlike anything really before or since, and i seriously hope this thread doesn’t turn into Prequel Bashing, instead focusing on what worked with these films and why they’re so lasting.
No, not high art. But a damn good time, and we need that, too.
I think Satar Wars actually goes beyond being good entertainment. Its a world of its own. Its a work of imagination.
The prequels had some things that really worked, Palpatine’s stories worked real good, Darth Maul was cool, the Duel of the Fates is one of the best musical cues in the six movies.
Some of the sequences in Revenge are pretty powerful.
And the filling in of the blanks is good.
The dislike of the prequels is just like changes the name here to Mubi.
^ That is completely not the case. The prequels are damn near unwatchable. The stories are a mess, the acting is horrible, the effects are jarring rather than immersive, and they are ultimately meaningless, purposeless marketing crap.
The originals (at least the first two) were inspired.
But don’t take my word for it.
And if you can’t click:
“It’s just fun entertainment”
Yes, I’d agree with this. I also think UFC, video games and porn are fun entertainment.
But do any of these deserve real critical appreciation? Should they be taught in university courses as masterpieces of art? Nah.
Fraser, I don’t disagree, though a class on John Williams would be interesting
My opinion is that if you enjoy it enough, it’s a great movie. Star Wars isn’t my favorite, but a film like Indiana Jones, since it’s sooooo fun and awesome, I’d call it art.
By the way I am loving the review, it’s hilarious
It’s the best thing to come from those movies—be sure to watch all of it. Good medicine ;)
Just finished, loved it, especially the end of part 6 “Wait, you said that.”
It really is comic genius. He would go on to do the same for the next two, and there are some good moments there, but his best work is in what you just saw.
And I would rather watch that anytime over TPM.
Even my 7-yr-old hated it.
I actually think Revenge of The Sith is pretty good. I had given up all hope of there ever being a good Star Wars film at that point though, so maybe I enjoyed it because my expectations were so low :)
My favourite is also Empire – head and shoulders above the rest.
The original song that was in Return… was way better in the first release.
even when i was a little kid, i thought all the star wars movies were really really boring, and i still do. and the prequels were unwatchable.
i did like the ewok adventure though, when i was a kid. haven’t seen it since
Uli³Cain
Star Wars was playing on spike and all baseball was over for the day so I left it on and it’s just a good, fun time.
Is it brilliant, No, it’s just fun entertainment.
People who want to call it the Holy Grail of Film are wrong (Holy Grail of Movie I can agree with, up there with Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade and Jaws), but everyone that craps on it are wrong too, it is what it is, and it is a Hallmark in Pop Culture and known worldwide.
