It was more a combo of him insulting Brooke Shields for having depression and taking meds
and going on and on about his religion. The Oprah interview came out same time (thereabouts) as the Matt Lauer interview (where he came off absolutely crazy)
oh… forgot about the context of it i guess
Well, most people are so completely inattentive that they JUST realized Cruise was a little wacky. They really needed to be slapped in the face with his wackiness in order to get it … and they finally did and were utterly shocked. The public only consumes what they’re hand fed, so yeah, they were a little surprised and this led to oversaturation by the media.
It’s like the Mel Gibson drunk-driving incident, the public were so SHOCKED that Gibson would drink and drive! And then, while drunk, he goes on about Jews and whatnot, and the public having NEVER ever been in such a position where they were drunk and said inappropriate things (this is only a Gibson thing apparently), were disillusioned as they gazed disapprovingly down their red noses.
Essentially what I’m saying with all that is, the public are sheep herded by the media.
Tom Cruise was already insane before this (see American Psycho as to what Cruise would be like when he’s not acting). When he jumped up on the couch it only made it more obvious. There is a strange thing behind his eyes, and I don’t know what. He seems almost inhuman.
Nathan, BAHAHAHA!
Johnny, I agree with you, too. I didn’t even see what the big deal was four years ago, when I was still sixteen. I mean, hey, the guy was happy. What’s so wrong with that? Having seen the Matt Lauer interview, I can say that, yeah, he came off a bit wrong (more than a bit, really), but it was the Oprah thing that got everyone riled up. I don’t get it. Oh well. :/

Is today the anniversary of this incident or something? Why is this being discussed now?
DUH, man! It took four years for us all to calm down about it! PSHAW!!!
;)

Real timely, Johnny. I bet your six roommates are glad you moved out. I would slap my best friend if he jumped around and screamed like a lunatic “for hours,” regardless of the reason.
So the thinking in the OP is " I did it, so it can’t be crazy?" Frankly, going to the tape, everyone in the audience seems nuts, too:
I agree with Johnny. What’s wrong with being deliriously happy? If you are, do you have to keep quiet about it so people won’t think you’re crazy? Good grief! When we were little kids we could do stuff like that but as adults we’re told to “act like an adult” which unfortunately, puts the kibosh on showing how happy you really are. I’ve jumped around with friends when something good happened to me or them. It’s fun. It’s exciting. Let it out! It’s okay to be happy. Now about those six roommates – that’s too much for me. :-)
Are we in a time warp?

The gentleman doth protest too much.

i don’t see why everyone thinks he was acting insane. when my wife and i were going out and she suggested we get married, and i realized she was serious i had the exact same reaction, if not more so. i was jumping up and down and screaming like a lunatic for hours. and i had 6 roommates, so it wasn’t exactly a private affair either. it was the greatest moment of my life and i felt like expressing it. i thought his reaction was completely legit.
the only difference is i was 23 and he was in his forties. is that what makes it weird?
i don’t get it
