I thought the documentary was hilarious, but I don’t I can watch a Drew Barrymore film.
Check out the trailer. I wasn’t going to watch this as I originally thought it was a stupid idea – now that I’ve seen the trailer, I’ll probably tune in. Drew in an actual dramatic role…and it looks like she nails it.
The doc is a funny portrait of people who are trying to be touching. The film adaptation is probably going to try to be a “touching” portrait of people we’ve been led to expect are funny. Needless to say, the 70s get this kind of grotesquerie right, whereas today we bring too much of a Social Services perspective to it.

So HBO is doing a feature-length film version of the Maysles’ Grey Gardens with Drew Barrymore (in old-person make-up) and Jessica Lange. Not sure how I feel about this. I’m not a particular fan of the documentary, but I did find it very interesting in how the lines between documentarian and subject became a bit blurred as the film progressed and one of the women became a bit infatuated with one of the Maysles. Lacking that interaction, I’m not sure how interesting a new film about the pair could really be.
Thoughts?
