Heads up!!!! 50% off Criterions

Can’t believe I just caught this thread the day the sale ended. Maybe God is cutting me some slack, since the Borders 50 percenter a couple months ago wiped me out.

I did succumb to the recent Deep Discount 25% off deal…these sales go to show that regular prices should be lower.

I live in Canada, and shipping is quite expensive, so I only managed to grab about half of what I was originally planning. The second list are blind-buys. I know, very risky… but the prices were so cheap that it almost feels like a steal anyway, so why not?

Repulsion
White Dog
Clean, Shaven

Europa
Jigoku
Seven Samurai
Yojimbo / Sanjuro
Twenty-Four Eyes
Mon Oncle Antoine
Mouchette
Cria Cuervos
Spirit of the Beehive
2 or 3 Things I Know About Her
Made in U.S.A.

Boomstickplease: spirit of the beehive is probably the most beautiful Criterion i own. it is haunting. love that film.

Seven Samurai: pack a lunch, its long, but worth it.

Yojimbo/Sanjuro: good stuff. i enjoyed them both, glad i own them. need to watch them again.

Europa: started watching it a couple times, but haven’t gotten into it. i think its going to be a great movie, just haven’t clued in yet.

Loofrin:

I have a feeling that I’m really going to fall in love with Spirit of the Beehive, and Cria Cuervos. I have a soft spot for “coming-of-age” storylines, and I find a majority of Spanish cinema fascinating. I have caught a few trailers and clips for both films, and I must say, the lead child actress in both is quite talented.

I am a shameful film-fan and have never seen a Kurosawa in it’s entirety! I plan to change that. I’ve heard that those three titles are great ones to start out with. Seven Samurai’s length is a little worrisome but I’m banking on getting sucked into the storyline, it’s world and the characters that inhabit it.

Lars von Trier is one of my favourite modern Auteurs. Dancer in the Dark is nearing the top of my favourites, regardless of it’s faults. I’ve seen a majority of his work and have enjoyed each one. Europa was a must-buy for me after viewing a clip of the opening scene; how hypnotic!

I picked up Yojimbo/Sanjuro, Ran, and Contempt.

I regret not buying Hidden Fortress, but hopefully deepdiscount.com will do another buy one get one free Criterion sale like they did last summer.

I feel like I’m missing out :(

I own the complete collection and all re-releases so all I got to buy were the most recent Godard films. I should sell everything and start over again…the thrill is in the chase.

@Napoleon Blownapart – that’s a good thing you got Ran & Contempt. Both films are out-of-print. Nice find.

Boomstickplease: Ana Torrent has the most beautiful and haunting eyes ever. I was drawn to the film because of the cover. this was a true blindbuy on my part, I had never heard of it, but i had to know about the little girl with the eyes.

I think this thread should be devoted to current Criterion sales at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, DeepDiscount, etc.

loofrin

it is, to a degree, but let there be digressions.

Poor poor Cinesnag and his abundance of Criterions. :)

By the way if you want to get rid of some Criterions I’m your guy.

Hi, all! I’m new here, I actually found this place because of the B&N sale. It’s great to see all these other crazy cinephiles!

When I found out about this sale, it was the best day of my life. My grandmother, who was my film viewing partner for many years and who really turned me on to classic film (she bought me my first Criterion DVD, 8 1/2, after hearing I was taking a film studies class in college a few years ago and I haven’t stopped since) died last fall and I just got a good amount of money from her estate. So, in honor of her, I
stocked up, and stocked up GOOD…

FIRST STORE TRIP:
Brazil (3-Disc Set) – Divorce Italian Style – Heaven Can Wait – The Lady Eve – Last Year at Marienbad – La Strada – Magnificent Obsession – Mon Oncle – My Own Private Idaho – Playtime – The Rules of the Game – Scenes From a Marriage

SECOND STORE TRIP:
The Red Shoes – The Virgin Spring – Wild Strawberries

FIRST ONLINE ORDER:
The 39 Steps – Charade – Fanny & Alexander Box Set – My Man Godfrey – The Red Balloon – Smiles of a Summer Night

SECOND ONLINE ORDER:
Brief Encounter – Hiroshima, Mon Amour – Seven Samurai – The Vanishing

and I thought I was done. Until I came here yesterday and saw that Ran was out of print. Which led to…

THIRD ONLINE ORDER:
The Earrings of Madame de… – Ran – The Seventh Seal 2-Disc

My bank account takes solace in the fact that my grandmother would be extremely happy that I will now watch all these great films, as well as extremely proud that I got them at such a steal. And now the Amazon sale. Wow. What a summer!

All I can say is, Thanks Grandma! I’ll watch these and think of you every time.

loofrin

dan. i think that’s a great way to remember your grandmother. and i’m sure she would be extremely proud, i’m also sure she’d be in the kitchen makin the popcorn for the movie marathon. :)

Yeah, I happened to go into Barnes and Noble on the last day of their 50% off sale and picked up “Repulsion” (on blu-ray of course), “Hiroshima mon Amour” and “Diabolique” (I’ve heard rumors that Criterion will re-release this title but I can’t help it, I want it now dammit!). Guess I got lucky.

FYI, Amazon.com is selling “L’Eclisse” and “L’avventura” for $15.99 each, which is pretty good considering it’s 60% off and they’re both double-disc sets.

@Zeke: Yeah, the OOP status is what compelled me to go for the blind-buys on both counts. The frustration of hunting for the ridiculously pricey OOP Hitchcocks haunts me to this day…

Of course, it’s hard go wrong with Godard or Kurosawa, but I’ve been trying to cut down on the blind-buys lately.

loofrin

DAMNIT!

i got a 15% coupon in my email yesterday from BN. so, of course, i went to the store and got Ran. i’ve paid for OOP Criterions before… it hurts. with member card got it for 29.46 i wish i got it last week! grrr

Drew Gregory

Haha why didn’t you get last week?

My last order came in the mail today: My Dinner with Andre and Le Samourai.

Lona

I had ordered Godard’s two new films to BN and they arrived the day after the sale ended :(
I guess that’s why I should buy things online.

Drew Gregory

Did you buy them anyway Lona? I decided on 3 Women and Le Samourai instead of them, but it was close.

Lona

I didn’t, Drew… but they are still sitting there waiting for me. I can’t decide if I should or not. It’s killing me!
AND now Kurosawa’s Dreams is only $10 so I have to buy that too.

I hate my job.

Drew Gregory

I don’t know if this has been mentioned yet but Amazon has dozens of Criterions 60% off right now

Barnes And Noble has decided to once again reach its hands into my wallet and rape the everloving shit out of it.

Starting November 10th, for two weeks, Criterions will again be 50% off in store or online.

I don’t think I can match the spree I had over the summer, but I know I will definitely pick up:
PIERROT LE FOU, Z, and WINGS OF DESIRE.

So yeah, I also think I’m gonna ask everyone for my Hanukkah presents now so I can milk the sale for all it is worth… lol.

There is no way I can spend as much as I did the first time through, particularly with the holidays fast approaching. But I will mention certain select titles to my wife.
