I didn’t even think of the Kurosawa box set being cheaper. I already have all of his Criterion films but right now, I really wish I didn’t.
@ David Ikiru and High and Low are two excellent choices and are in my top 5 of Kurosawa’s.
At this point I’m just praying that Eclipse is included. Oh please god.
If the sale is the same as the one a few months ago, which it looks to be, all Eclipse Series and Essential Art House Films are included.
Thank you for the info J.D. In that case, I may also try and get the Eclipse 4: Raymond Bernard set because Wooden Crosses sounds so damn good.
well i took advantage of this sale A LOT back in the summer. I’m still recovering from it. lol
So I think I’ll buy one or two this time around.
I’ll be most likely buying Young Lincoln with Henry Fonda, 2 or 3 things i know about her, and perhaps That Hamilton Woman.
Why can’t we have this for canadians!!
Wait, it’s not for Canada?
Im pretty sure this applies to Canadians, theres just no barnes and nobles in canada. You have to do it through the U.S. Branch.
Oh god that scared me. Thank god.
Oh boy. This is gonna be exactly the right time for me. I’m gonna have somewhere in the neighbourhood of 800 unaccounted for dollars. Yee haw.
ooh, the list is growing in my head already….
Repulsion?
Kind Hearts and Coronets?
Rules of the Game? (definitely!)
Young Mr. Lincoln?
The Most Dangerous Game?
The Fire Within?
Carnival of Souls?
and if Essential Art House are up for grabs:
Last Holiday
oh hell, and the Kurosawa box…this may hurt a little.
I haven’t seen a lot of Altman’s work, just McCabe & Mrs. Miller but I liked it a lot. Would anybody suggest getting Short Cuts or Tanner ’88?
@CJ Roy: They ship with UPS to Canada. The risk of paying gigantic amounts of import duties is very high. I just wouldn’t take the chance.
Jared, Short Cuts is phenomenal.
Import duties sucks. :( Why can’t Amazon.ca do a sale like that.
I would suggest Short Cuts and 3 Women. Two of Altman’s best.
…and I would totally suggest Tanner ’88, but be warned, it is a television production and is shot on video.
Perhaps the quintessential Altman.
@Le Scrameustache: They did one at the beggining of the summer. But at the time, I wasn’t really turned on by the Criterion Collection….
To all of you considering the Kurosawa box:
Barnes and Noble isn’t famous for their pristine packages. In fact, the last time they had a 50% off sale, 4 (!!) of my dvd’s came in broken cases, and the Eric Rohmer box set was badly damaged. Cassavetes was, thankfully, unharmed.
Since most of you have so many of the films contained, and are buying as a collector’s item, I urge you to reconsider ordering over the internet! Pick it up in-store, and let’s bask in the glory of our great, undamaged centerpiece together.
Are we sure the Kurosawa box set will be included in the sale? I only ask because it will still be a pre-order item…
There’s no way I can say no if it is 50% off…..
Ahh! I hate not having my job anymore… now not only do I not work at BN to find this stuff out, but I don’t even have a Barnes & Noble within 2 hours of me to buy everything! Sad day.
Adam, I do not believe that pre-orders are eligible for the discount. The Kurosawa box is scheduled to hit the shelves on December 8th, so if the sale is still going on by then, it should be part of it, but until then, bn.com will most likely not have it as a 50% off pre-order. I base this on the fact that during the sale earlier this year, I was waiting for Made in U.S.A. and 2 or 3 Things…, and they were not 50% off until their street date. Hope this helps, even if I may be the bearer of bad news :(
Does anyone know if that set of 10 Rialto films was included in the last sale?
I went to Barnes and Noble today to look at their selection of Criterions, and I was told that the half-off sale applies to any Criterion that’s not in store that you order to be delivered to the store during the sale period. Good to know, in case your store doesn’t have one that you want in stock.
Also, can anyone tell me whether the Korda’s Private Lives Eclipse is worth buying? I’ve never seen any of the films, but I’m a sucker for historical dramas with vitality.
SALE IS ON NOW.
Any confirmation on if the sale is for two weeks, or for longer?
Z, Europa and A Nos Amours, here I come!
It seems the Blu-rays aren’t on sale….
Wait, Adam? No? They were apparently on sale last time. Sadly, the lady who worked there didn’t know that…..
I want The BRD Trilogy, The HUman Condition, The Spirit of the Beehive, and probably some more. Christmas present times!
Savvy
Yeah, I got a blu-ray last time……
John David
I might just be able to get that new Kurosawa box set. 25 Kurosawa films for about $160? Um. Yes.
