They are all on sale. The website is listing DVD and BD 50% off.
Good. I wanted to get Monsoon Wedding and Last Year at Marienbad. Well, others, too, no doubt, but I’ve got a harking for those two right now.

“They are all on sale. The website is listing DVD and BD 50% off.”
Yes, but if you run into an uninformed salesperson you better be prepared to ask to see the manager because some of these folks will not even check into what they don’t know. I guess that’s always true though.
Pierrot Le Fou isn’t 50% off on Blu-ray
Man, even though it is not on sale, I’m tempted to buy the AK 100 set….
Mike, too true, too true. I know that it scares the hell out of me to ask the salesperson something, because she told me that, no, the Blurays were not on sale (and I found out on here that they were). I didn’t want to question her knowledge and make her have some kind of disdain for me, even though I was quite sure that I was right. Oh well…

This was so hard because of the Holiday season coming up but I figured with the 50% off and then the 20% off extra for a new member, it’s too good to pass up. My original goal was to buy the Blu-rays but since they are not 50% off today (maybe tomorrow?)…I wanted the better savings which were the box sets:
First Order using the new member 20% off Code:
- The Adventures of Antoine Doinel
- Simon in the Desert – was on sale for $12…couldn’t beat that.
- 4 by Agnes Varda
- Fassbinder’s BRD Trilogy
- Eric Rohmer’s Six Moral tales
Second Order using the 5% off Code:
John Cassavetes Five Films
Grey Gardens Set
I feel like I am not yet done as I want the Ingmar Bergman: Four Masterworks boxset, Eisenstein the Sound Years and the Stage and Spectacle: Three Films by Jean Renoir box sets and for DVD: Battle of Algiers, L’Avventura, The Spirt of the Beehive, The Bank Dick, Divorce Italian Style and Contempt. But I better stop… or else people in my family are just going to get Holiday popcorn and fruitcake for Christmas..hehe…
Adam, my only problem with the Kurosawa set, although it is awsome, is its lack of and kind of special features. I mean, sure, the films are important in themselves, but, you know, special features are quite important, too…

Is this sale online only or is the 50% off available in the stores themselves?
Dennis, nice buy on the six moral tales, I grabbed it myself the last time they ran this sale.
Yeah, The Six Moral Tales is one of the proudest purchases I’ve gotten, as well. Had to get it at the fifty buck pricetag, instead of 100…

Hi Chris…it’s both online and at the stores. But online just started today…I think the stores start tomorrow. I think that’s why the Criterion Blu-ray’s have not been updated yet online.
Thank you Dennis. I was wondering why I didn’t get an e-mail update. BN is usually very prompt in sending out notices, the better to suck the money out of my pockets.
I’m excited!
Getting Wings of Desire, Drew? Or did you already get that?

Ok with the coupon code! Done. Now: how does a Membership Number work? Can it be used (say, “shared”) by more than a user like a coupon?
starts tomorrow in store?
yeah, and the kurasawa set has films on it that I already own
What I am getting…..
-The Complete Monterey Pop Festival (Blu)
-Eclipse Series 2: Documentaries of Louis Malle
-Eclipse Series 10: Silent Ozu
-Eclipse Series 14: Rossellini’s History Films
-Eclipse Series 18: Dusan Makavejev
-Sawdust and Tinsel
-The Taking of Power by Louis XIV
-Wings of Desire (Blu)
Dan: Hi Dan, the new member codes (or actually those that just joined up) can get 20% off. There are two codes available and so, you will get the 20% off. So, I noticed for John Cassavetes…it removed like nearly $13.00 off while something like Adventures of Antoine, it removed $10 off.
Can it be “Shared”…the ones that you found online (the new account users) and the 5% off can be shared since its public. I’ve read that people who go to the stores will be printing the 5% off coupon and then reusing them so they can get the Blu-rays at $15 ($13 for paid membership). But really, I don’t know if that will work…(works at video game stores but I guess we will find out when people try it tomorrow).
Now the paid membership to B&N, that one is tied to your account and you can’t share that.
Filmy: Yeah, it starts tomorrow. I’ve read people who went to B&N today and no sale yet BUT they said that the stores they have visited have seem to restock and gotten more Criterion titles. So, knock on wood for those of you who intend to go to the stores.
I was going to limit myself to two, but how can I? 50% + 20 %!!!!
Time to get:
Tokyo Story
Rules of the Game
Ikiru
Wings of Desire
Black Narcissus
Drew, sadly, of those I only have The Taking of POwer by Louis XIV. Damn, I wish I had more!

Who cares about Criterion? Ballast comes out tomorrow!!!
Fredo, didn’t Ballast come out LAST YEAR!? Why did it take so freaking long for it to come out?
Well, though, I guess good independents have a hard time finding distributors. Sheer stupidity.
Savvy
I saw Ballast around this time last year. And yes, it’s a film far superior than 98% of what is contained in the Criterion Collection. Especially for people who don’t like movies where “stuff happens.”
Its delay to DVD can only be attributed to blatant racism.
hmmm…
I feel like I had a lot more movies on my list during the last sale. So far I wanna get:
-Solaris
-Last Year at Marienbad
-Wings of Desire
-Repulsion
Does anyone else have any more suggestions? These will be Chrismas presents, so I can stock up!
Pierrot Le Fou
Wings of Desire
Solaris
Complete Monterey Pop
Monsoon Wedding
Bob Le Flambeur
…so far
I stopped in my local Evanston, IL B&N today to drool – er, review what they have in stock. Which turns out to be just about everything. And they were getting ready to put up a display tomorrow when the sale officially starts. I asked if I were imagining it or were some of their prices were higher than what’s on the web site, and he said No, they actually compete with one another as different parts of B&N (??), and the web does sometimes have lower prices.
Looks like it’s started on the web site already. Oh, the guy in the store also said they could order just about anything, and would honor the sale price as long as it was ordered during the sale, even if it didn’t come in during the sale.
I’m so broke right now – hours at my job have been cut… but I sure am tempted. On my wish list:Michelle, Personally I love extras and packaging too much to go for any of those big sets. My suggestion is you buy Wings of Desire, The Last Temptation of Christ, and The Seventh Seal. That will be a total of $60 which isn’t bad at all no matter what your budget is. Which of those films have you seen?
I’m buying
Eclipse 17: Nikkatsu Noir
Rebel Samurai Set (Samurai Assassin, Sword of the Beast, Kill!, Samurai Spy)
The Third Man
Le Samourai
Eisenstein: The Sound Years (Christmas present for my friend)
I’ll probably end up buying Gomorrah on Blu-Ray and maybe something else as well.

These stores always seem to make up their own rules…
