This time around I got:
Black Narcissus
Paths of Glory
Antichrist
Toshiro Mifune Samurai Trilogy
Sword of Doom
Dillinger is Dead
Carnival of Souls
House
I spent a fair amount of money, but not as much as I had last time.
The sale ends nov. 21 as I was told by a b&n employee and it was said in the latest Criterion newsletter.
Paths of Glory
Mona Lisa
Paris, Texas
Because I know you all have been going mad with curiosity…
I got
Black Narcissus (Lost my first BD copy of this movie due to an administrative error. This replaces it).
The Night of the Hunter (Time to get rid of that awful MGM 1:33 edition).
Stagecoach (Time to get rid of that old WB clip case edition).
I thought briefly about getting Make Way for Tomorrow, which is an amazing movie, but it would have violated one of my movie purchasing policies, which states that I must see a movie at least twice before buying it.
Well, here is my haul thus far:
3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg
Eclipse Series 1 – Early Bergman
Eclipse Series 22 – Presenting Sacha Guitry
Eclipse Series 24 – The Actuality Dramas of Allan King
Crumb
Early Summer
Ivan’s childhood
La Ronde
Le Plaisir
Louie Bluie
Thin Red Line
The Magician
Night Train to Munich
Sawdust and Tinsel
=====
Maybe one more later or not….I think I’m done though….although I do want the Rosselini Eclipse set.
Eclipse Series 12: Aki Kaurismäki’s Proletariat Trilogy
Eclipse Series 14: Rossellini’s History Films—Renaissance and Enlightenment
Eclipse Series 20: George Bernard Shaw on Film
Jarmusch films: Stranger Than Paradise, Night On Earth or Mystery Train
Kurosawa: Drunken Angel and Stray Dog
Renoir: Stage and Spectacle: Three Films by Jean Renoir
Nice choices KNDY. You will be happy with that Thin Red Line and Crumb. You should get the Aki Kaurismaki Proletariat Trilogy. I bought it a few 50% off sales ago and was very impressed. I picked up House today but will get The Secret of the Grain and The Golden Age of Television on Friday.
Nice choices KNDY. You will be happy with Crumb and The Thin Red Line. Out of your choices I would go with the Aki Kaurismaki"s Proletariat Trilogy. I picked it up a few B&N sales ago and was very impressed. I bought House today but will get The Secret of the Grain, Seven Samurai, and The Golden Age of Television on Friday.
I really want to get By Brakage Volumes One and Two, Pigs, Pimps & Prostitutes, Ingmar Bergman Trilogy, La Jetee/Sans Soleil, If…., Sweet Movie, In the Realm of the Senses, Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé.. Unfortunately I can only get one or two.
We’ll see :O\
Get Sweet Movie and By Brakhage Oddly.
I just picked up Chungking Express today. Will get like 9 others on Friday.
I am getting the Dusan Makavejev, William Klein, and Nikkutsi Noir eclipse sets and maybe some others. If I love those 3, which other sets should I get?
Chris Knudsen — Thank you so much for the help, I was agonizing a bit over which ones to get.
♥Hi Chris…both the first two are very cheap during this sale. I haven’t purchased the Nikkatsu Noir because I chose Allan King and Early Bergman over it. But next sale…
@SUPERKAL – Thanks, I want to get the Kaurismaki since it’s cheap with this sale. I have debated over the Golden Age of Television….over and over…I may get it. We’ll see…

I just finished watching our Blu-ray review copy of the upcoming “Modern Times” and all I can say is wow! Comparing the PQ to the Image DVD, you definitely want to pick this Blu-ray up. I know it’s pre-order right now but it comes out on the 16th. Definitely a title I have to recommend!
Paths of Glory
The Thin Red Line
OK…officially done with the sale…not that I want to be…I just don’t think I could afford to keep going!
Final list:
Thin Red Line (BR)
Seven Samurai (BR)
Paths of Glory (BR)
Vivre sa vie (BR)
Rashomon
3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg
Pre-ordered
Night of the Hunter (BR)
Modern Times (BR)
Eclipse Series 18: Dusan Makavejev Free Radical
Eclipse Series 21: Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties
Cesar: Excellent purchases! Add “The Delirious Fictions of William Klein,” and you have my three favorite Eclipse sets.
I picked up two films that should have been in my collection long ago: “Wings of Desire” and “The Exterminating Angel.”
I’m excited to have picked up Exterminating Angel as well. I probably should have done it sooner. I’m sure it looks amazing since the first time I watched it was a crummy VHS copy like two or three years ago.
Making two orders; one with each paycheck I get during the sale. First order: Antichrist, House, and Charade; second order: Seven Samurai and Night of the Hunter (all on Blu of course). Hopefully, a deep pocketed relative will pick me up the BBS set for Christmas since it won’t be half off.
I want Night of the Hunter, but I bought Une Femme Mariee on Bluray yesterday for thirty bucks, and I don’t think I should spend so much… :’(
Also, it will be a while before I can get the BBS set, which friggin’ sucks, because I want it NOW.
Savvy
As a high school student with no job, I have virtually no money of my own.
BUT Christmas is coming up and I’ve informed my parents of the sale and my preferences. Here’s what I’m hoping for:
Letters from Fontainhas
3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg
Stagecoach (Blu)
Playtime (Blu)
The Leopard (Blu)
The Rules of the Game
We’ll see.
Just bought:
Seven Samurai (blu)
Paths of Glory (blu)
and also ordered House. I normally buy a lot more but I just blew $150 on vinyl the other day and had to restrict myself. NEXT paycheck however, I’ll be pre-ordering the BBS Boxset so I can get the discount and will pick up Antichrist, The Actuality Dramas of Allan King, Darjeeling Limited, Thin Red Line, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Breathless. All blu-ray of course (except for Allan King).
intend to get on BD:
Paths of Glory
Stagecoach
Seven Samurai
M
Playtime
Days of Heaven
Summer Hours
Red Desert
Modern Times
@superkal don’t worry, you can either wait for it to come back in or just order it.
its killing me that i’m probably gonna have to sit this one out. i just don’t have the scratch…
ok guys, honestly, what are the chances that Criterion will release the Cassavettes box set in the not too distant future? Because i’m going to pick up the Pedro Costa trilogy, but i’m wondering if i should hold out for Cassavettes. What you think?
@Joks: Do you mean on Blu-ray? I have no idea how likely, but my guess is that they would upgrade the singly-available titles (Shadows/Faces/Under the Influence/Chinese Bookie) before/if ever doing the whole set.
I picked up Seven Samurai (BD) the week before the sale for 40% off (couldn’t wait another week!) then the Yojimbo/Sanjuro box (BD) and Vivre sa vie (BD). Would love to pick up more of course but I overspent as it was. I may pick up Louie Bluie as a gift for a friend, otherwise I’m done until the next sale.
so are there 15 or 20% off coupons to use in conjunction with 50%, like there were last sale?
I splurged on the Six Moral Tales this time around, so I will have to hold off until the next sale.
So far :
House BR
Darjeeling Limited BR
Breathless BR
Thin Red Line BR
Antichrist BR (pre-ordered)
not sure if I am going to dip into the pot anymore. Thinking about picking up JULES AND JIM.
Hidden Behind the Screen
Anyone know when it ends? Sorry if it’s been already said. Also the Von Sternberg is now at 40$…Good enough for me. My lousy Barnes & Noble though! I looked online to see if it had anything I want and they don’t.
Can’t wait to get Hidden Fortress back for ten dollars! (My original is scratched to the point that it’s not playable)
