I’ve just got Beastie Boys Anthology from B&N and it’s slightly different to the one described on the criterion page. I has no poster and the cover is in thew new rather than old style. It’s also not described as the criterion collection in B&N.

Also I looked for Criterion versions of the Rock and the royal tenebaums in the B&N sale but couldn’t find them online although there appeared to be special editions that might have been the same just with different artwork. I don’t think they’re OOP.

Have some of the more commercial Criterion discs been re-released without any fanfare with different cover art and why are B&N not marketing them as Criterion products?

Sorry if this has been asked before and thanks for any help.

Of course, you’ve got to see a movie any way you can. More than three-quarters of all CC movies are only available on DVD. But when a movie exists on both formats, it blows my mind that some people in the Criterion fan community don’t go in for the blu rays and opt to stick to DVDs instead.

The CC is composed of wonderful films carefully crafted by genuine artists. What blu-ray does is it allows the viewer to achieve a film-watching experience as close to seeing the movie in its original form as possible. Comparing DVD versions to BD versions is really no comparison at all: BDs are always more film-like and don’t have as many “video” artifacts.

I can’t imagine that there is a dedicated appreciator of paintings that would be ok with studying a low-quality photograph of the Mona Lisa when there are higher-resolution versions readily available. So why are people so willing to accept low-quality versions of movies?

TOTALLY agree. I’m always surprised when people can’t see the difference between Blu-ray and DVD, or don’t care. I was the same way before I actually SAW a Blu-ray, but once I started buying them, my appreciation for these films (not just Criterion) was enhanced. The extra resolution makes you feel closer to the films, in a way. DVD, for me, is distancing, especially on an HDTV where the flaws of that format are made more apparent.

Did anybody else get a 70% off one item coupon from barnes and noble in their email today?? I don’t even know what to do with myself… I might get the Pigs, Pimps, and Prostitutes set, but the special features on it aren’t that great…. or maybe I’ll make a blind buy on the BBS set. OMG!!!!

@Drunken: Could you share it pretty please? I did not get said coupon.

I don’t think so… it says I have to use my email address to order it… I guess I got it cause I haven’t ordered from their website yet and they really want me to… any coupon-savvy posters know how / if I can share it?

Why only eight days and not a few weeks? What is a bummer though is that the majority of the titles won’t be released until late in the month of November. I really wanted to pick up Three Colors as well as 12 Angry Men.

Damn. Rushmore was one of my sure buys.

Given these dates I’ll still pick up my other sure buy, Smiles of a Summer Night, and maybe something else like Close-Up, The Exterminating Angel, or Pickpocket.

#@^&#$%^ it ends a day before the fanny and alexander blu ray??!?! bahrahghahghasle

I guess I’ve got a lot of renting to do in the next month so I can decide what to buy… looks like I’ll hang on to my Hulu subscription!

I don’t know who chooses the dates of these sales but I’m a little concerned as whoever it is clearly has access to parts of my brain. Every time they organise a sale it’s ever so carefully positioned so that I’m not quite able to make savings on the titles that I reeeeaaaallly want.

It’s like some sort of special-ops mission that they have going, it’s silent, it’s precise and nobody realises it’s happening until they’ve done it and I’m left crying in the corner of the room in the foetal position!

There are a few of the older releases I’ll hopefully be able to take advantage of for when my tears subside;
Jean Vigo Collection
My Life as a Dog
The 2 Chabrol Films
Secret Sunshine

There are a couple of older releases that I may pick up also.

Kuroneko will be out by then! The only ones that won’t be out that I would consider buying are the Suzuki re-releases.

Oh, and I think Identification of a Woman will be well worth a $10 blind buy!

I just recently moved so i now live close to a barnes & noble. I’m curious how this works, is it exclusively in-store, or does the 50% off apply to online purchases also?

double post. damnit.

It’s in stores AND online! In case you don’t already have it, it might be a good idea to pay for the membership – it costs $20 and you get 10% off everything for a year, plus it gives you coupons every so often. If you plan to spend $200 during the criterion sale, the membership pays for itself, not even including the coupons and the next criterion sale.

The manager back in movies and music at my B&N said something about a Criterion sale the week of Black Friday as well. I’ll try and get some more info out of him.

Eyeing:
Science is Fiction
Costa Set
Identification of a Woman
Phantom Carriage

I will just kill myself if there’s ANOTHER sale at Black Friday!

Anybody else get the email from Barnes and Noble about their flash sale on facebook today? I have no idea what it is, but I’m getting my hopes up… they say it’s one of their best offers ever, so that means it might be better than the 70% off coupon I got last month! 90% off??

wtf? It’s only 30% off!

Any truth to the rumor that many B&Ns are preparing to stop stocking DVDs altogether?

oh geez I hope not!!

Yep, just a measly boring old 30% off coupon. Over-hyped, obviously, but I used it to order The Four Feathers blu-ray. Got it for $21 and change, tax included and free shipping, plus another buck off in rebate since I used my B&N charge card to pay for it. Not bad but not particularly exciting. The website has a few other blurays marked down to $30.88 that will land around the same price point if The Four Feathers isn’t on your want list.
