Heads up!!!! 50% off Criterions

I don’t know; Amazon has been sort of undermining the sale by rotating through some of the collection at half off (plus a dollar or two, which, considering B&N charges tax, is not a huge difference—I bought the David Lean/Noel Coward set for 52% MSRP); if they continue this, and actually do cycle through the entire collection throughout the year, it might be preferable given the even spacing for buying rather than having to binge buy.

I remember I used to buy all my CC DVDs from DVD Planet when Amazon still sold them at MSRP (if B&N had a sale at that time—around 2006—I didn’t know about it), but now their selection is months out of date. 35% off; good times.

^ It looks like Amazon’s sale has more or less stopped as of today. In the past week or two, I’ve bought Blow Out, Repulsion, and Island of Lost Souls blu-rays all for like $19.94 each. And then last night I caved and finally bought Night of the Hunter for $23.27 (still more than 50% off!) cause it was one of my quick picks.

But today Night of the Hunter is up to $29.15 and all of the other Criterions that had been floating around $18.99-$20.99 (Stagecoach, 8 1/2, The Red Shoes, and others) seem to be back up at around $23.99-$29.99, which doesn’t make it quite worth it to wait for the B&N sale.

I wish I could get a job with Amazon’s pricing department, if for no other reason to see what factors go into it. But they’ve definitely taken a chunk out of what I would have bought at the B&N sale. Amazon will certainly make it less painful if the B&N sale doesn’t happen… but, again, I’m not sure if my worries are reasonable or not.

I think it’s a safe bet that the 50% off Criterion sale will begin on July 10. My local B&N connection said there would be a short 3-week sale starting that day. She claimed not to know what it was, but her description fits the pattern of what they’ve done over the past few years, after the Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale expires. B&N never pre-announces their sales, they just issue emails to members/subscribers, update their website and put new signs up in the stores.

Ok – I guess I’m just missing the days when we had a reliable man on the inside. Why did you ever leave, Loofrin??

long story, personal reasons.

in the past, it came on the heels of the b2g1 free sale.

long story, personal reasons.

Lol yeah… I don’t think anyone wants to work at Barnes and Noble forever!

@KNDY Do you know when the sale ends? Don’t they usually end sometime in early August. I think that was the case last year. Thanks in advance for your response.

Has anyone else made a wishlist of CC already for the sale?

Haha next to the discount this sale is why I love working at B&N!

As soon as I saw the sale starts on Tuesday I pulled:

The Samurai Trilogy
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
The Gold Rush
Vanya on 42nd Street

All Blu-Ray, finally made the switch last year with The Music Room and Godzilla.

I’m moving at the end of the month, so unfortunately I can’t spend too much on the sale, but I’ll do my best!

I think I might only buy the Brakhage and Frampton sets this time… There’s not much else I just have to have at this point…

THE GOLD RUSH and 39 STEPS, very definitely. I might go ahead and upgrade DAYS OF HEAVEN to Blu. We’ll see about others.

I’ve been doing such a bad job of holding off on things I want, that for the first time there’s nothing that must buy. Though I am very intrigued by the Czech New Wave box set.

There’s that Lean/Coward box set, too. Dammit.

I think I’m going to pounce on The Spy Who Came In From the Cold. It might eventually be released on BD but I don’t want to wait. I want it now!

You guys remember last July (or maybe the July before that?) when there was a brief window where you could get buy 2 get 1 free AND 50% off Criterions? I hope that happens again this year… I’ll try tonight at midnight. Hopefully no B&N spies are reading this, cause I don’t want to tip them off.

TakaAwesome

Let me know if that works!

Miasma

^Actually, DFFOO, I’m a spy for B&N. I already told my boss about this, and he’s telling his boss, and by midnight I think POTUS might even know.

Hey people – on Criterion’s Facebook page, they pointed out that they just added Eraserhead to their Hulu page. You know what that might just mean…

(hope you all liked the pronouns at play back there)

AxelUmog

Eraserhead… no fucking way, I’ll freak WAY the fuck out if that goes Criterion BLU

TakaAwesome

I’d totally be down for Eraserhead. … and Badlands. And though there have been zero hints, I’d really want Possession.
