In the heat of the crossover I just threw my entire wish-list into the cart, bank account be damned!

I went for:

Being John
The 39 Steps
Certified Copy
The Magician
8 1/2
Playtime
The Seventh Seal
Broadcast News
Belle De Jour
Wings of Desire
High and Low
Fat Girl

The only one on my wishlist to get left behind was The Lady Vanishes cuz of the math… the one that got away :(

Yes! Thanks for the coupon code, KNDY!! Will it expire?

I really wish it were august so I can pick up the Dardenne films. That’s all I really want. Hmm, may sit this one out.

LOL Barnes and Noble is trying to tell me that they’re giving away blu-rays of Pierrot Le Fou for free:

Damn! I’ve been trying to track down Pierrot Le Fou for a good price. Free sounds pretty good… I’m going to see if my local B&N has a copy of it today, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

^ I had the dvd when it was still in print, and then I upgraded to blu when Amazon weirdly got a bunch of them in last fall and was selling them for $20. Needless to say, B&N is not really giving them away.

You lucky bastard. I’m hoping there’s just an in-store copy that flew under the radar when I check out the store today.

Me too Tommy….maybe the sale will extend until then? They come out in early August, I think.

I picked up:

The Human Condition
Diabolique
Sweet Smell of Success.

I think that’ll do me for this sale. I might slip back in a week or so and pick up The Fugitive Kind.

Might buy the Hollis Frampton blu ray. Too scared to buy BRD or Cassavetes Five Films because I know a blu-ray set is about to come up. Apparently someone found a Third Man blu ray at a Barnes and Noble here in Atlanta about a month ago and I’m still depressed. Also a guy on blu-ray.com offered to trade for about $50 worth of movies for his copy last summer and I didn’t take it….I’m an idiot.

I haven’t missed one of these in a good 2 years, but I think I’m gonna experiment with no buying this time around. Hulu+ is pretty much giving me all my Criterion needs these days

WHAAAAAT??? Dammit! I’ve always been hoping to come across one of those….

What is so special about the Criterion release of The Third Man on BD? I think that was the first Criterion BD that I purchased. Still haven’t watched it though (I saw the movie about 500 times in film school).

Its out of print Santino…

Santino, if it’s still shrink-wrapped you can sell it for well over a hundred bucks! Even out of the wrap you can still get a lot for it!

Santino

Oh really? Wow, that was quick.

My copy is not shrink wrapped. But I don’t think I’d sell it anyway (unless I could get thousands and thousands of dollars, haha).

To Drunken Father Figure of Old….

Are you familiar with any of the works by Shôhei Imamura since you admired PIGS AND BATTLESHIPS (1962) a lot? I’ve just recently watched VENGEANCE IS MINE (1979) last month, and it was my first time watching an Imamura film. I’d like to recommend VENGEANCE IS MINE if you are interested in any more of Imamura’s works.

Has anyone that ordered from the crossover have their order shipped yet? It says mine was supposed to ship today….but no sign of that yet.

I was saving up some of my gift cards for this sale and bought some of the new releases:

The Gold Rush
Sumer with Monika
Sumer Interlude
Being John Malkovich
The Organizer
Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr.

I have Slacker on my way with still a little money left over to get something else. Any Suggestions?

I figure this is the best time to buy box sets so I’ll probably get a couple from Eclipse and the David Lean Directs Noel Coward set. There aren’t too many main line blus I want to pick up since the last sale (that I haven’t already bought) except Summer With Monika and The Gold Rush.

as far as Eclipse go, which do you think are essential? I’m thinking of getting the JP Gorin one?

Mine has shipped, I got both sales! i bought 3 and 2 of them are being shipped in one box and the other in a seperate box.

The Gorin set sounds great. Read this. It got me excited for it. Nobody talks about Gorin but his interviews for Criterion are interesting and his Top 10 Criterion list as well. He’s damn brilliant. I was going to buy it but ended up passing on the BN sale and spent my money elsewhere because of the darn lack of free shipping to Canada.

FÖRFÖLJARE, among more recent Eclipse Series sets, I think the Czech New Wave and Warped World of Kurahara are the two best they’ve released in the past couple years. The Gorin and Downey Sr. sets are very entertaining and also less expensive than most Eclipse sets. The Late Ozu, Postwar Kurosawa and Nikkatsu Noir sets are all excellent collections that I recommend to anyone who’s just looking to get into the Eclipse Series. I write a weekly column on the Eclipse Series for CriterionCast.com in case you’d like to read more of my reviews on these films.

well kids, enjoy this sale for me. i think i’m going to have to sit this one out. i just can’t afford anything right now. more worried about rent and food than criterion at the moment, besides my local library has tons of them. not that i have any time to watch the ones i already have. :}

Tonda

You can still enjoy being King of the thread though, Loofrin.

And i will double confirm that the crossover orders from last night are shipping. Mine is en route.

Yay! Mine just shipped :P

Ughhhhh! I’m so pissed I missed that crossover clusterfuck! Oh, well. It’s still a damn good sale, so I’m gonna take advantage.

I’m considering upgrading to Blu for the following titles…

8 1/2
High & Low
Last Year at Marienbad
Seven Samurai
Fanny & Alexander
Le Cercle Rouge
Days of Heaven

Can anyone tell me which ones are worth it and which ones might not be?

Viewer Ben

Woohoo! I managed to order some during the sale crossover and it shipped today! I got:

The Gold Rush
The Samurai Trilogy
Vanya on 42d Street (as a gift for someone)

All Blu-Ray. Can’t wait till they get here!

You’d think that B&N would really plan better than that with their sales. I guess not too many people realize it’s happening though, especially since it only lasts like 2 hours. Oh well, their loss is our gain!
