The experiment sounds interesting to me and I would like to participate. That means I would have to nominate films to be selected at January 7th of 2010, right? How many and which categories are there going to be in order to nominate films for?
well, coming December, I will email (if you comment on the link post, I’ll get your email privately) everyone to remind them about the January 7th date.
It will be all categories like the Academy Awards, except
- No Foreign Film
- No Documentaries
- No shorts (animated or docus or live action)
regular Acting awards for male lead, female lead, and both supporting.
best film, best director.
art direction, cinematography, costume design,
film editing, score, song, sound editing, sound mixing
screenplay adapted, original
all of those 5 nominees.
Makeup, and visual effects 3 nominees.
we’ll get everyone’s nominees suggestions,
pick the ones with most mentions,
and released the “official” nominees.
Leave a time to catch up on some of the nominees,
re-watch some others… vote
and tabulate again.
The more people from around the world, the merrier~
I am interested in joining in for fun if I can get up to 48 films. Will let you know later in December.
Everyone is welcome =D
What about animated films. Do you still have the best animated film category? If so, can they still be nominated for best picture?
good point, quentin.
I have counted “best animated film” as a category.
but yes, they can be nominated for “best picture”
soooo…
bump!
nobody else feels like they would join?
x) come on, I know most people at theauteurs have something to say
about any film that gets or not nominated for something… ;P
Wait only films from this year right?
Wait, no foreign films? Or do you just mean no seperate foreign films category?
there isn’t distinction between foreign films and films in the English language. =D
and yes, only films listed on IMDb for 2009, unless they are super independent…
in which case there’s a two-year period limit.
So you can nominate a really (and I mean ‘really’) small independent film
with no distribution deals that was released in 2007.
another bump! xD
I think the topic was put in another section…
I wonder what the moderated replies said.
Anyone else joining? There’s still time =D
Ill give it a shot. there are a few films that i have best see soon.
no worries, still time until December~~~
I’ll message everyone to remind you early December,
and later to ask for nominations =D
This is a reminder that there’s one month left to watch films.

cheers,
sorry, double post~~~

Nomination lists are due on January 7th, 2010
Heh, I’ve only seen 20 2009 movies.
I should just arrange however many I’ve seen by the end of the year in order of quality and leave it like that. No “best of” list for me!
—DiB
I have only seen about 20 too. How does one get to so many 2009 movies when most of them will probably only be available in 2010?
Examples: Wild Grass, Around a Small Mountain
Yeah, looking through the nearly 200 movies I’ve recorded watching during 2009 (in other words, no rewatches because I don’t record those on the IMDb), many of them are 2008. I think people should hold off yearly awards ‘til the year after they’ve been released, so that people can have time to actually watch them (and, in the case of distribution, ability).

Well, 2008 and 2007 films are allowed for the vote if they have had distribution issues.
For example, in the instance that there’s a really great independent Canadian film that has only been seen in Canada and has taken a while to get to DVD or online would be allowed a nomination. But if you’re talking about some other film that has already been nominated for some other award and has been released in a few theaters around the world, it wouldn’t be legible.
Yeah, that 20 is including The Brothers Bloom, a movie with 2008 tagged at IMDb but which got released very limitedly in theatres and then got a pre-sale rental release, both in 2009.
In 2008 I had a lot of money and went to the movie theatre all the time. Thus, in 2009 I no longer had that money, and saw very few movies.

Yeah, Brothers Bloom took ages after the festival circuit, so it is legible this year.
I also spent a lot of money on films last year, I haven’t been able to buy films for my own collection.
Maybe everyone should post the films they have seen, and we could nominate stuff. Or just make nominations based on that watching… I dunno. Hence, the "experiment’ tag here. xD
ps: why is there spam on my thread?
Update*
You can begin sending your nominations until January 7th.
Apologies, I did not manage to see 48 films.
Amy
Hey, guys!
I thought I tried my luck here =D
Some friends and I discuss who and what should get nominated (we did this last year), so this year we thought we could go a little bit bigger, and ask for people to help us choose.
The rules for films are simple,
1. All films, regardless of language, are eligible
2. Only movies listed on IMDb on the year of the award, or released between February January to December in any city of any country around the world are eligible.
3. Films with a very limited release, and/or problems with distribution will likely have points for them and might be eligible for the next two years.
4. Since all the nominated films could be foreign, there will be no “Best Foreign Film” award.
5. Sorry. No documentaries or shorts at the moment.
To be able to give your opinion, you only need to watch 1 film a week – that means 48 films this year.
You can read a more ‘detail’ description on my website,
http://personal.amy-wong.com/2009/02/28/experiment-awards-2009/
if you are interested in voting, just leave a comment in that post.
The more, the better the experiment will run, right?
