I would love to have a quote feature.
Maybe some buttons, too, for italics and links and such.
And a way to come here without logging in every single time. There’s no “Stay signed in for all day” option for anything like that.
And some sort of notification as to which posts are new and which I’ve already read maybe?
Just throwing those out there. I like the way the boards look a lot.
I Heart The Auteurs
although a spell check feature would be nice
Oh, also, Jean-Pierre Melville should be an available option as an auteur to add to your profile. For serious.
David, thanks for getting this off to a great start. I have a long wishlist of features I’d like to add to the site, but I want to prioritize the ones you (the people on The Auteurs) find valuable.
1) Some HTML in posts
2) Make Styles more expansive. None of those pictures or definitions really define me. I am confused by the purpose of that part of the profile altogether
3) Links in “About Me” are hard to see. They are blue over green.
4) I would love a more innovative way to write about films than the forum, something like a blog for your profile. Is this what the wall is?
5) Preview Reply before posting
I really like this site! Keep up the great work.
You ought to be able to add directors to your profile as you search the library simply by clicking on his or her name.
I would like to be able to quote other people’s messages, and italics and bold would be nice too. I would also love to see more American films in the library. I was just looking today, and saw that The Hustler, The Maltese Falcon, The Sting, and The Caine Mutiny aren’t in there. They’re all great movies in my opinion, it would be nice to see them in there. But overall, I think that a lot of movies need to be added to the library. Good or bad, I’m sure there’s somebody here for all of them, and then you have to option to review more movies.
But I really do like the site, keep up the good work.
make us hear color
bold = * bold * (without spaces)
italics = _ italics _ (without spaces)
Thanks for pointing that out to people, Kevin! Yes, The Auteurs uses TEXTILE formatting and not HTML, at least right now. But soon, along the line of your suggestions, we will make style formatting much much easier for the forum.
Justin: I don’t know about that, but I think I can make you see sound…
Jonathan: you are thinking along our lines too! We will be re-vamping the film profile pages as well, helping them be as useful as possible in letting you express your thoughts and feelings about movies.
Thanks for all the tips guys, keep em coming!
I’d like to see a stay signed in option, being able to quote posts and adding more directors to the auteurs list, and add all films by the directors who are already on the auteurs list.
Also, I’m sure you’ve noticed that by now, but there seems to be a problem with double posts.
I think that’s probably the poster’s fault.
1. Ability to stop email notification. (My thread gets a few replies and my phone goes off a lot.)
2. All messages under one roof.
3. New message notification on the site itself.
4. Avatars on forums!! Please?!
5. When posting a new thread, a way to categorize them.
6. A randomness topic would be nice. Can’t be about film 24/7.
If I think of more, I’ll post em.
I’d like to be able to search for people, not just filmmakers. I’d also like to have the favorite auteurs linked to the page about each auteur.
MANY THANKS FOR AN AMAZING WEBSITE!
I dunno about HTML. It could make the forums seem cluttered, with colors and images here and there. I like the simple feel of the forum now.
However, we need a “last post” button for topics, so I don’t need to keep checking for responses. Also, the forum should be more organized, and should expand into separate forums for music and other areas of discussion. But not too many.
And, absolutely, a way to stay signed in.
A way to stay signed in.
I’ll second the idea for a blog feature on profiles, and it doesn’t need to be anything fancy.
There are several specific films and filmmakers I would like to see more of here, but I’m sure plenty of things are coming, and that has been well addressed in other threads.
Perhaps some features and articles by site members – some editorial standards and guidelines would of course need to be made clear, but an expanded film journal side to the site would be a great development.
A running feature or spotlight on local/regional film communities would be a good thing to look into; there are festivals all over the place, and even the best of that seems to be erratically covered.
I can’t invite people to join through facebook (of course this could be part of the beta thing).
Freaking sweet though!
To anyone wondering how the forum codes work (for italics, links, pictures, etc.), check out this thread.
I agree with all of David’s original suggestions, and would also like to see our little avatars under our names in here. It helps add a bit more “personality” to the posts.
A few more things -
1. Some way to hide SPOILERS within a post
2, The ability to delete a post (would solve the double-posting problem)
3. What’s the deal with the thumbs? I understand wanting to acknowledge people for making a helpful contribution, but the “down-thumbs” seem like a bad idea that could alienate people or cause other problems down the road. Unless a person is being abusive or threatening, can’t we just ignore the posts we don’t like? Or maybe, instead of down-thumbs, we could have an “ignore” function? Just brainstorming here…
Sub-categories so that the forum will be more organized.
I notice a lot of “favorite” lists, which are good but don’t really provide a lot of discussion, more like a lot of people just talking about their own thing.
Also, quoting would be useful.
a minor issue, but LUKAS MOODYSSON, THE DARDENNE BROS and LYNNE RAMSEY are absent from the profile list of favorite auteurs. haha!
Include Ethan Coen to “JOEL COEN” as a listed Auteur. “The Boys” are completely equal in the collaboration of their movies, but due to DGA regulations they usually credit Joel as the director and Ethan as the producer.
In addition, please allow direct replies to posts, not just added at the bottom of a long list. I usually want to address a single user’s comment but will get completely lost in the length of the page.
First off, this is an excellent site that I am enjoying a great deal.
There have been several excellent suggestions thus far that deserve serious consideration. I’d like to see lengthier threads broken down into page numbers after, say, 20 posts, with the user option to start at either the beginning (or oldest posts) of the thread or from the most recent thread posts. As it stands, users have to do a great deal of scrolling down which is not very user friendly.
I love the site, but there’s gotta be a better way to add friends. I had to reopen my Facebook account just to add one friend.
it would be great to be able to subscribe to specific threads so you can be notified when there is a reply.
Hi guys, thanks so much for the feedback! I’m very happy to see that most of your suggestions fall in line with fixes and improvements we have already noted and are working on. Let us know what else you’d like!
I would like to be able to scroll through directors/films/etc on a person’s profile – to click on the thumbnails and drag across, like a slideshow.
Also, hovering over a film thumbnail could induce a pop-up with more info on that film.
I would love a recommendation engine of some sort to help discover movies based on prior likes and disliked. Perhaps the ability to tag movies with a set of keywords to help in the recommendation as well. Also the ability to find other users with similar tastes.
