Great ideas guys. Love your rec’ engine idea Mark!

Contradicting others, I hate the idea of avatars on forum pages. It looks clean the way it is now. Clean and purty.
As with Citizen Spain, I’d love the ability to scroll favorites, like Amazon has on their product pages (for related items).
And please add more pictures, directors, and films to select from.
This site is GREAT.

RE: Avatars – we could have the option of turning them “on” or “off” to keep both sides happy. Another reason I’d like them is to help keep track of who is who. People keep changing their names, some have the same first name, etc.

David pretty much nailed it. I’d quote his post…but I can’t.

No offense, of course, I quite enjoy this place. But it does lack some signature things I’ve come to expect from a Forum.

I see no need for Avatars, to be perfectly honest. I wouldn’t protest if they were added, but I really like the minimalist thing we have going on right now. Just names and opinions and nothing more. Classy.

Michel

not just jean-pierre melville. but a broader selection of films as well. I noticed that only the partial filmography of most filmmakers is available…

1. A way to change what four favorite films show up on our profile, or to even include more than four on our main page.
2. When looking at our favorite films page we should be able to rate the films, without going through the library or going through each individual page. I favorite a lot of films thinking I would just rate them later, thinking they would be listed like they are in the library, with the stars easy to check, not having to open each individual page.
3. A way for users to create pages for movies that don’t have pages, same with auteurs.
4. More options for our page pic, the big one, or a tool that lets us upload pics from our favorite films and then add that whatever kind of cool effect to them.
5. I for one would rather there not be forums for non-movie talk. This site is dedicated to film, lets keep it that way, there are far more online communities for social networking and everything else out there.
6. Some kind of user generated movie quizzes maybe in a longer span of time, I don’t know, this site is really beautiful and i’d hate to see it crammed up with flashy crap like every other place, but at the same time, I’d like more ways to interact with users on the site.

Add more directors. I love Anders Thomas Jensen..but him, nor any of his films, are on here. I guess this is something that will be rolling out though? I can’t imagine you won’t have a database as comprehensive as IMDB. Everything should be on here.

I would also like the video player to be more like Hulu’s in that the pop-out window resizes the video when you resize the window, and doesn’t take up an entire page.

I hate for that to sound like a complaint, because this site is awesome.

Agree with Kenny. I like forums that have sub forums and then you post in there. Just a long linear forum will make it difficult to find a threat you’ve been reading, if it hasnt been posted in for a few days.

  1. I’d like to see the list of four favorites in one’s profile be randomized so that it’s not the original four I added displayed all the time.
  2. I’d love to see a live preview of forum posts. It makes it much easier to put care into the formatting of one’s contributions here.
  3. I’d like a way to find out what other people list the same auteurs as favorites that I do.
  4. I’d love a way to catalog, here, what movies I’ve seen and what I thought about them. It would be a great way to use this site as a resource in working through the canon of great films.

nate451

Also, and I feel bad about complaining, but just to let you know that it’s an issue, the slowness of the overall site is something of an issue for me. Every click takes a few seconds to go through, which ultimately leads to a site that just feels sluggish and disrupts my ability to follow threads of curiosity throughout the site. I know this is a difficult issue to deal with, though, and may be beyond your control.

Nathanael, absolutely agree with you. Page loads are slow now in all areas, and we’ll be doing a lot to shore that up over the coming weeks. The site is 100% unoptimized right now, and you will see dramatic improvements as we tune things.

Justin

Everything Nathanael said is exactly what any cinephile site should be.

Ryan Boudinot

First, this is an incredibly cool site. Great start. Looks like Nathaneal Eagle touched on a few things I’ve been thinking about. Here’s my two cents.

1. A cataloging function similar to what goodreads, librarything, and shelfari do with books. I basically want a database for my 1000+ DVDs. This sounds indulgent, but those of us who collect lots of DVDs sometimes forget what it is we have. A cataloging system would allow me to browse my collection and sort by director, title, etc. I also want to browse other users’ lists.

2. Ability to search for other users who share my same taste in auteurs or favorite movies. Today I found myself wishing I could find other Jodorowsky fans. It would be cool to search for all users who are fans of this auteur.

3. Widgetize this mother. Allow me to drop code into my website displaying a list of my favorite auteurs and films.

4. An iPhone ap, similar to facebook’s.

5. The ability for users to be tagged geographically. In other words, say I have a question about Fellini that I want to ask Italian cinephiles. I’d be able to search on user location.

6. The ability to convert my catalog of films into a graphic timeline of when those films appeared. Also, a map feature showing where those films originated.

7. This is more a biz-dev type suggestion, and perhaps conflicts with the vision of the site as a place to watch films as well as talk about them, but some sort of interface with Netflix would be cool. The ability to add to your Netflix queue from theauteurs. This might work as part of an affiliate marketing strategy, with Netflix kicking revenue back to theauteurs for every title added to queues.

8. A film still library would be neat.

9. I’m not sure what the “Style” categories are really for. At the very least, these should be clickable, and should lead me to lists of films, auteurs, and users who share the same style preferences.

Overall, though, a splendid start. Thanks again.

In a way, you could search for Jodorowsky and then find the films on Auteurs and find those who had left good reviews, even if that approach has more steps that would be desirable. I’ve seen 3 films by Jodorowsky and he kind of tortures me. Why 3 then? Well I saw a double feature, then I had already requested a movie by him at the library so I decided I might as well see it. Basically, a week of torture.

KEEP THE HELVETICA. Seriously. It’s my favorite font, and although this may sound silly, I love sites, etc. that have it.

Also, HTML/text modification/insert picture features for posts, etc., etc.

I just tried to add “The Long Goodbye” and “In a Lonely Place” to my favorite films and was unable, this should be rectified a.s.a.p.

Other than that I gotta go with everyone esle asking for a “stay logged on” feature.

I have already been writing to Melissa and the auteurs support staff directly before discovering this timely link. Thanks to Melissa and support staff for their quick feedback. As I have told them, I am, too, a BIG fan of this site already. Here are a couple of things I have mentioned to the support staff for inclusion, some already covered by above comments:

1. Functionality to add editing featues easily, but I can live with Textile for now, as I am learining it quickly.
2. Ability to add picture clips to posts and/or a ‘signature’ with a favourite film quote, for example. But maybe the clean look now is best.for usual posts. Could be incorporated into Profile feature?
3. Ability to add Criterion titles one owns or recommends (to encourage the growth of Critierion itself) somewhere, perhaps in Profile. Can even set-up a competitve type of thing re who has the ‘best’ or ‘coolest’ collection, all to further Criterion, not salve one’s own ego.
4. Yes, add more film options to favorite films, and auteur staff assure me this is coming. We all would love to show-off even more titles that we are all keen on, I am sure. Same is true for auteur/director options, of course.
5. Better relevance of the “Related Films”.section when you call up a film. Some of the related film titles are hokey and mis-leading, at best. Check it out.

As for above comments, I too, would love the ‘quote’ or ‘reply to’ feature added, so that we can directly respond to a person’s comments. Also, we DO need a way of getting rid of double posts, as I have been guilty of this, dummy that I am, and regret I can’t eliminate my obvious goof.
The feature mentioned by others to organize the forum topics would greatly assist those of us who scroll down endlessly trolling for topics to read or commnet upon. Yes, we do need those non-film topics, too. We really need something like a “Greatest Film” thread, where longer, more reflective reviews can be posted. Otherwise, we are scrolling through the long list of existing reviews by indiviual film title.

One thing for sure, the auteur support people deserve all our thanks for giving us this site and for their support and encouragement. I can’t emphasize enough that we must all do everything in our power to keep this a friendly site, where each person’s point of view is respected. We have a great, creative community going already. Let’s strengthen it and let it grow. May a thousand schools of thought contend and ten-thousand blossums arise!
Thanks for the existing ability to edit posts – I am always rethinking everything myself or catching typos, so thanks for allowing for the re-think option.

I don’t know if someone mentioned this already, but under add auteurs in the profile section, perhaps the option of adding someone manually to the list, if they aren’t featured.

Great site, I’ve been having a blast. I think the database idea would be fantastic, and it would be a fast way to build up the list of films we could select.

I’d like to have a way to put threads directly under either the auteurs lists or the films list, which would prevent multiple forum threads on essentially the same topics.

It would be great to have a way to just see the posts that were posted since my last visit, so I don’t have to wade through endless forum headers.

If I were to write “Alfred Hitchcock” it would be slick to automatically create a link to the “auteurs” list, or even back to the Criterion site.

Bonus points that add up to a coupon or free Criterion dvd of my choice! HAHAHAHA!!

Charlotte that sounds like a good idea (being able to add auteurs). Maybe there could be some kind of master list or link to IMDB so duplicates aren’t added (just in case).

Peter Zingg

Hey you ruby-on-rails auteurs people, can’t you get the auteurs list to update dynamically using an IMDB name lookup? These all failed:

Jean-Pierre Melville
Any of the Romanian new wave: Mungiu, Puiu, Porumboiu
Carlos Saura
Doris Dorrie
etc.

Lots of these guys and gals are Cannes winners. Auteurs all most definitely…

Catherine

Definitely would like the auteur list clickable (to easily bring you to the movies available on the site for each one).

It might be nice to have a feature that finds people who have rated movies similarly to the way you have and then recommends other movies to you that they have rated highly, sort of like the Netflix aggregate movie recommendations but specific to individuals (aggregate recs would also work, though the social networking part might be lost).

Really like the site!
