Ermanno Olmi should be added to the list of Directors.
Sorry if these has been mentioned before:
Forum-wise:
1) An icon next to the topic or some kind of representation that you, the member, has participated in such topic.
2) Arrange the forum into pages (i.e. each page contain up to 20 posts, then the 21st post would appear on the “next” page icon with links on the header and footer of the page)
3) Sub-categories. I.e. discussions on specific directors, films, general film discussions, and so on. Would make life much easier.
Yeah, I’m most familiar with phpbb so most of my suggestions come from those. Would be nice to have a little avatar option enabled (with max size 100×100 pixels or something for the sake of tidiness).
One more little thing – could we be notified on our profile of any new friend requests? I know when we get new messages, the number of them appears at the top of the screen. Perhaps something like that for the requests? It’s a bit arduous to go into the requests section a few times each day to make sure I haven’t missed any. Still – great work, all around!
It would be better if you could delete your posts- hence deleting your double posts if you make them.
I can understand some’s dislike of avatars, but some of us (me!) don’t look at names, and any distinct object (an avatar!) would help so we (me!) know who we’re (I’m!) talking to. I can’t sit here and look at your NAME, that takes too long, and disrupts all the flow I got going. (Even if it’s just 16×16, I’d be content!)
I have a system people!
Also, new ideas!
6. “Save For Later” feature. So many good films I’d love to watch later, but sometimes I can’t access my Netflix easily (when I’m on the go), so It’d be great if we could bookmark.
7. Put the name of the last poster on the forums. It’s not a big deal, I just like to know who the last poster was, so I don’t click on a thread that I think has been updated.
I love the ideas of:
- organizing threads
- showing users’ avatars in threads
- NOT allowing any sort of signature or other linkage clutter at the end of posts.
- more text input tools for people that aren’t familiar with HTML to add links, change font styles, etc
- being able to delete posts to prevent double posting
- having some sort of way to REQUEST an auteur or film be added to this site, even if they need to be approved by admins.
- in addition to the previous, maybe give the auteurs the ‘thumbs up / down’ rating system, so that once a director like bret ratner gets a certain number of thumbs down ratings by enough users, he can’t be considered an auteur anymore… just wishful thinking….
and most of all, i love how CLEAN and streamlined this site is; i don’t think you guys should add ANYTHING unnecessary. I know first hand a lot of people like to get lazy and like to be linked to everything… but the main things that appealed to me in the first place about auteurs.com was the lack of shit everywhere.
oh yeah. and make t-shirts that we can buy with our username / ‘my style’ images on them, so we can buy them and make auteurs.com lots of money. keep this site CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN— the less links the better; for the love of all things fine-cinema.
and yes, as lauren said: THANK YOU.
After looking at other sites, like the Criterion Collection forum, for example (!), I tend to agree with Mr. Sweetums that clean is better, at least for standard postings. We can clutter up our profiles all we want (as I have already) and keep the forum postings clean looking for easy browsing. Thank you Mr. Sweetums and others for emphasizing this point.
Not necessarily a sig, because those get cluttery and all…dajipofjdapoijf. (to say the least)
But I guess some form of text quoting? This site is pretty organized and I wouldn’t want to ruin that with unnecessary sigs.
would be cool if one could sort the directors in the “favorite auteurs” section of the profile. i added a lot of them, but not necessarily the ones i like most first. just a little feature and not very urgent, but would still be nice.
The ability to import/export ratings to and from Netflix would be useful. Having to rate a movie twice seems sill, especially when the two sites use the same metric.
I would kind of like to able to change my user name since there are several Davids. I was expecting to fill out a user name in the next step when I was filling out my account. I was wrong.
@David: You can, go here and just change your first name.
what about a (commented) “links” section to which you could propose your favourite websites, online movie magazines… and so on.
and – seen the internationl aspect of the auteurs – maybe sorted by language? i know some great german sites, but would like to have some hints at good french and english ones.
More movie pages.
I’d get rid of my double posts if I could. Help me to not look like an idiot.

You did that on purpose, I’M ONTO YOU!
Another idea, there’s a way for Netflix to tell the computer “Hey, I’m doing something, so don’t turn off the monitor.” as opposed to when I’m watching something here, I have to wiggle my mouse every so often so the monitor doesn’t turn off. I don’t know how it’s done, but is that a possibility?
How about Auteurs creating a separate focus on animation like you do with your Documentary and Classic tabs?
And then strive to have all categories represented in your monthly Festival line-up; ie. one documentary, one animated, one classic?
You have a nice selection of animation already, but it pains me that I’m unable to watch any of them.
With the sheer amount of films out there is there no way users could fill in a form to help increase the database? I’m sure people would gladly fill in details regarding their favourites. It could help speed up things up. Personally, I won’t be happy until Truffaut’s La Nuit américaine is on the system!
Other than that, keep up the great work!
Auteurs should clarify the differences in movie availability in relation to global territories.
I just bought $10 worth of credits in the hopes that it would trigger some “buy/watch” button on more movies, but alas – I’m still only allowed to watch the 12 free movies that Auteurs have picked out.
Please give cineastes in Denmark/Europe access to more of your movies – or disable the feature to buy credits for anyone living in a country where credits don’t make a difference.
Unless I’m not seeing it, I’d like a way to bookmark or link into the profiles the articles, much in the same way we can link to our favorite movies.
I wish that I could click on the name of a specific auteur that I may have not ever heard of when I’m on someone’s profile page. Instead, I have to copy their name then search and then click on one of their films and then click on their name. Sorry if this was already mentioned, I just think it would make the interface much better.
Also, I think the forum could have a much better organization, with various sections, such as “General topics,” “Criterion Collection,” etc. And it would be nice to see who last updated a thread.
Most of what I would like to see has already been mentioned like a cataloging feature for our profiles, so we could list everything we’ve seen, more for personal reference than anything. I really like the look of the forums, I think that they should stay as simple as possible, however, some features like quoting and overall organization would be good for simplicity’s sake. I don’t mind avatars but I hate signatures! They would clutter up the streamlined look of the forum.
Also, when we rate movies, I think it would be nice to be able to view our own rating alongside the overall rating, so we could still see what other people think of the movie.
I agree with what Zilla said! I’m not too good with technology, but I know when I watch videos on the computer with other programs it tells the computer monitor not to go to sleep. I think that should be a definite required feature.
I love the site! Keep up the good work guys.
A forum search would be nice. There are too many topics now to browse through.
I don’t like the new “pages” when a thread gets too long. It is a pain to sort through all the comments. It would be great if you could be directed to the latest post.
^ I came in just to ask for that.
Regarding Allison’s suggestion – how about giving us a few options as to the number of posts (or threads) per-page we can view (one of the options being “all”)? The usual message board behavior is to tell you which threads have new posts and allow you to jump right to those. It’s great to see the changes coming fast and furious here, but maybe you guys could let us know if/when they’re coming? Maybe have a “sticky” thread devoted to news about updates and upgrades? Just a thought…
Do mderators have a way to consolidate redundant threads? – an idea which occurred to me after a look at the many overlapping “What Should Be In The Criterion Collection…” type of threads…
This may have already been said, but I’ll give my two cents anyways: I’d really like to be able to upload our own film stills to the “my style/choose your image” section of our profiles. It isn’t really that important, but I’m such a fool for customization. :p

Cheers guys, just wanted you all to know we are reading each and every one of your suggestions and find the quality of them absolutely brilliant. Glad to see the community is so in tune with the changes the team want to make themselves! Keep up the great work.
