Help make The Auteurs totally awesome

Justin

Yes, being able to have more customization options on our profile page would be nice; and linking to our favorite auteurs on the page instead of just having theirs names on the profile would also be nice. But what we really need is the ability to quote other people’s posts more than anything at the moment.

One thing that would go a long way to stopping redundant threads would be a forum search, allowing us not only to check and see if what we’re about to post has already been posted, but also making it easier to find the threads we want on this increasingly busy message board. Ideally, it would search both titles and/or posts, and possibly users, in case we want to see everything posted by a particular person.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this one already, but how about a ‘search threads’ function?

Hehe, umm, that’s what I just said. ;-)

Thanks to the developers for their work on this site. In regard to the speed issue that I mentioned a number of pages prior, there already seems to be some improvement. Have you already made changes, or am I just imagining things?

In regard to forum posting, if we’re using textile (a solution for formatting that I LOVE) it’d be nice to have a key linked to. More importantly, the CSS needs to be updated to properly format ordered lists, unordered lists, and many of the other HTML tags that textile makes it possible to add.

Also: it would be lovely when browsing the forum to have a link to take one to the last page in a thread so that people who are following conversations can quickly see new activity.

Question – did you remove the “Films” sub-forum? Because there are a bunch of new (and old) threads whose titles don’t make sense now, such as “Your interpretations of this film,” etc. I know that used to be in the Inland Empire sub-forum, so it made sense then, but now that it’s part of the “general” category it has lost its intended meaning. I’m confused by this change…

Get rid of the thumbs up/down, there should be a button to show only posts that are unread, buttons on the reply to topic box for things like style, link, imbed, etc. I guess these have already been noted by others, so I’m just casting my vote in their favor.

Let’s get an iPhone app! I’d love to browse on the train ride to work.

No worries, thanks for all the hard work and keeping in touch with the users. I like this new “association” idea, I was just worried when I saw the confusion this error was causing. I haven’t created a new thread since the feature was implemented, hence my misunderstanding.

First off, I have to say that I love this site. I’ve been looking for a cool movie-discussion site (that wasn’t filled with pretentious people) for a while and I happened upon The Auteurs by accident earlier this week, and I am really impressed. I especially like the movie-viewing feature as well as the ease there is in posting reviews and ratings.

That said, here’s my 2 cents regarding what I think would make the site even more kick-ass (although I’ll be echoing a lot of what has already been said):
-quotes feature in posts…this is a standard in most online forums and makes discussions a whole lot easier
-thread/post search function
-an option to show your location on your profile page (this doesn’t have to be specific…it could be by city or by state or even by coast and country…I just think that if we had a general idea of where everyone was then we could then take initiatives in possibly organizing Auteur-led movie outings and events…how cool would it be to even hold mini-Auteur festivals where we have the most members?)

All in all, nice job by all in constructing a truly great site!!!

I’ll second any suggestions for more linking. It would be great if any time an auteur’s name shows up it is linked to his/her page (except in forum posts of course). Also, I’d love a “Who else considers these films favourites?” way to find people and likewise a “Who else likes these auteurs?”. If the site does progress further on the social connection side, some more information about users on their profiles would be nice, i.e. age, location.

Please don’t go down the path of adding every film and every director. That’s IMDb. My main attraction to this site is that the library is exclusive and curated. Therefore I would disagree with any suggestion for user-generated content — there are always suggestions of ways to avoid duplicate entries or erroneous entries but I’m yet to see this work on other sites that use user-generated content.

Love the aesthetics of the site, love the minimalism and that every single things isn’t Javascript (ahem, Facebook…)

since I dont have netflix anymore, I’d really dig a sort of “Movies I Want to See” feature so I could keep a list of movies to get around to, and as has been said some form of recommendation system would be great

also, maybe a button to take you to your last post within a thread so you don’t have to search for when the new posts begin.

M-J, good suggestion, however I recommend IMDB for that. Their database is more complete and you can create different folders for the ones you want to see.

How often are films added to the library? I’d love to see a much more expansive selection.

I agree Joe-They have Bekind Rewind and Napoleopn Dynamite but no Peckinpah.

I’ve been seeing new topics appear but they seem to be replies to other threads. Is there something wrong with the ‘REPLY TO TOPIC’ box?

DCDreams

Some suggestions:

A way to delete Sent messages
Allowing threads within a forum topic to be sorted with the newest first
Rich text for replies
A cumulative indication of thumbs up/down in Profile
Ability to sort Forum topics by Update date, Title, Author, Number of Replies, etc.

I would really like it if clicking on a topic took you back to your last post instead of to the first page of the thread.

A lot of posts to comb through so I hope I’m not repeating anything. But here are some things I think could really add to this wonderful site…

- A search feature forums would be nice
- Categories for forums: instead of one giant forum, a room for discussion on directors, one for cinematography, genre, technology/exhibition, aspiring filmmakers, etc.
- The articles/notebook is a great direction. It would be fantastic to have an outlet specifically for up and coming directors/films that deserve attention

I’d love to have a source for short films. Do you plan on making the ones featured already on the site watchable? It would be a really great thing to have a place to go to see and read about good shorts, and also ones that are making waves in the festival circuit.

First off, the site is amazing and I’ve been waiting something like this for a long time. With that said I would like to see a little more put in to the profile pages. I work in the construction industry and don’t have a lot of friends or acquaintances that are interested in film. The possibility of meeting other movie goers in my area is the most exciting prospect this site has to offer. The profile pages don’t really allow for a lot of info on the user. I just think it would be really cool to organize viewings in specific cities and right now there is no way to find other users based on location.

I agree with “Shotzi.” I would love a quote feature; one in which we can choose a famous quote, or write our own. I’d also like to see more post-war movies within the library. Being a “theatre nut,” I’d like to see the film versions of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “The Glass Menagerie,” and “A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

As mentioned repeatedly above, I believe we REALLY need to start organizing the forum threads before there are so many, that no one is going to bother to sort through them. I realize there is an attampt at this by dividing under certain broad forum headings, so maybe this can be resolved. Still, I am afraid there are several great threads and replies that are getting lost, because the only sorting method in the largest general and all topics categories now is by latest post. Also, those who have taken the time to come up with topics and replies that really make us all think or show us a new insight should have a way of being recognized and not eventually lost in the shuffle. I would prefer quality over quantity any day, and will therefore limit my posts in the future, unless the thread is just basically a ‘quick chat’ type, where brief is fine, of course.

I sometimes wonder what all these threads are doing or if anyone if bothering to read any but just the last post or two on a thread. I know they serve a social networking function, but I would hope that serious discussion can also occur here – as it does, on occassion. It seems often when I have spent the most time and thought on a post, I get no response at all from anyone, which is a bit discouraging. Any kind of feedback is better than none at all, otherwise, why are we bothering? I have very much appreciated those who have at least acknowledged they have read a particular post, be it mine or someone else. Perhaps we should work at enhancing the response feature somehow. Does anyone else feel the same?

an iphone app (with minimalist options – viewing profile, forum and posting)
a feature to delete the post (in case we did those stupid double posts)
I like the way it looks, simple and non-flashy.
There are about 50 wonderful Indian movies I would love to see them added here in the database, or atleats top20 (reason being this is a portal to discuss film in general and not just criterion)

I’d love to be able to reply to a specific post in a forum instead of responding to a post later on in the forum. I know I’ve wanted to see if someone responded to a post of mine, but I don’t want to dig through all the other posts to find something in response. There should be a dropdown button on a post so you can read all the responses to that particular post.

Also, I’d love to be able to see how many thumb up and thumb downs I’ve gotten. I know I’m not in the top 50, which seems to be the only way to view your status. Just a small window on the profile page that keeps a tally of your thumbs would be nice.

A search posts function, to make sure we aren’t starting threads for topics that have already been covered in previous threads.

And I’d like to see the “< PREV – 1 – 2 – 3 – NEXT >” page navigation both at the top and the bottom of each page. When looking for the latest posts in a thread, it’d be convenient to have that at the top to click on right away rather than having to scroll to the bottom first.

Oh and avatars would be nifty :)

@Brian Oestreich : those are some neat features to have, I am for it – thumbs up.
