Help make The Auteurs totally awesome

I was also wondering if there is a way to get auteurs forum on google reader.

@Filmy Andy: Currently TA forum feed requires authentication and I believe Google Reader doesn’t support authenticated feeds.

The following trick(adding authentication information to URL) works on my Mac Mail application but not on Google Reader),

http://username:password@www.theauteurs.com/topics/335/comments.atom
http://username:password@www.theauteurs.com/topics.atom

Make sure you replace special characters in your email address with their equivalent hexcode for e.g. “@” character in your username(email) should be replaced by “%40”. here is some help

I wish there would be half stars. i always hang between 3 and 4 and to some films i would rather give 3,5 or 4,5. some just dont deserve 4 but are not 3 either. :)

Profiles → Favorite Auteurs box → the directors’ names should be link that jump to directors’ pages.

Directors’ pages should have a list of directors films accompanied by screenshot and rating stars instead of the screenshot with link to individual film pages. I’ve been flubbing the typeahead search box on purpose in order to get a defacto list of each director’s films, so that I can rate each auteur’s body of work quickly without having to visit each film’s page individually. Primarily, I want to assess Kubrick’s entire body of work, and then move on to Alomodovar, to Lynch, etc. If I truly love a film or have no idea at all about it, then I’ll visit its individual page.

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback. We are in the process of re-working the forum to address some of these suggestions!

Profile → Ratings → See all: The ability to sort the ratings from Ascending/Descending by rating.

Profile → Ratings → The ability to batch compare my ratings to other people’s ratings (Goodreads.com does this for users’ book ratings)

BUGS!!
I haven’t read through this entire thread, so I wouldn’t know if someone already mentioned this:
I’m on broadband, yet every time I click on theauteurs, or even criterion after its recent redesign, I always get stuck with thumbnail pictures that don’t load. And while the fonts and colors of both the websites are aesthetically fulfilling, it irks me that these pictures won’t load (it just displays what one would usually type in the ‘alt’ tag when placing an image using HTML).

Be that as it may, I love both the websites – the interface and everything – and I’m more than eager to explore what’s in store as the site develops and expands.

The feedback has been great everybody, keep it coming! We’ve been doing a lot of planning for the coming months, and you can expect changes coming frequently.

I wanted to give a quick heads up that we’ve just turned off the thumbs up / thumbs down feature. We built this feature early on to provide a simple reputation system for our users, however it’s causing more problems than it’s worth, and we don’t want to encourage the users who are abusing it, so as of today thumbs are disabled and cinephile rankings are frozen. The next iteration of our reputation system will be not so easily-gamed and will be oriented towards quality participation, not sock puppets and vendettas.

love the fact that the thumbs have been removed, it actually put me off of the site in a way.

Make it a bit more obvious when you’ve added someone as a friend that a positive reply has been given.

I think having just thumbs up would be quite good, it doesn’t do any harm and helps build a friendly atmosphere. I don’t know what a reputation system involves, I don’t go on many forums much, but it sounds like it would try and cover all bases (?). Negatives don’t need to be covered, especially in such a non-constructive way that it provokes conflict and lack of understanding. I’m not sure if there is a need for a system anyway? I always thought forums were where you go in your free time to relax and share interests, from the forums I have seen it doesn’t take much for a relaxing place to turn into a little complex and stressful society of it’s own which I would of thought most people who frequent forums were trying to avoid in the first place, all starts with needless systems. I don’t mean to sound confronting if I do, I don’t know what your reputation system involves, but I have seen other forums idea of a reputation system, yuck, why would anyone want to spend their free time trying to imitate the complications involved in the part of your life that isn’t free time?

Thanks for turning off the thumbs feature. I have seen grown men (myself) cry when one of their most brilliant efforts had a couple of thumbs down or got no thumbs up at all. I got over it, but newcomers to the site will take offense at the negativity of a thumbs down. I suggested to one complaintant about this recently, that I would never give a thumbs down to anyone, and would only use thumbs up for encouragement. But let’s just keep the site friendly and open, which no thumbs does.
Although I would like to come up with a means of recognizing great contributions, posts or threads, that could easily get lost; I am not sure just how to achieve this and preserve our desire to eliminate negativity. But whatever works or you good guys decide will be fine with me. I am glad we are no longer ‘the Siskel & Ebert site!’ Thanks, guys for being so open.

Ohh yeah. Search on Forums! We are completely revamping the Forum; we are taking our time, and we’ll do this right. You’ll see some great enhancements in Forums in a couple of weeks.

Awww, no more thumbs down, I really enjoyed getting those. Nothing better than passive-aggressive disagreement.

Sorry about that Skeleton. Seemed like a good idea when we had 100 users :) Seriously, that’s very high on the priority list.

Yeah, the email updates could have a toggle button or something. And maybe I’m wrong, but when someone adds me as a friend, the only notification is through email. If I don’t click through from my mailbox I will never know that person added me — needs to be fixed?

I’m sure you guys will do a great job. I had a lot of issues with facebook in the beginning, but now it’s a smooth ride, except I don’t login as often since I began actively participating on The Auteurs.

how about one email like a daily digest (with all the replies to my post in a single day) , sounds OK to me.

Guys, forum comment notifications have been temporarily disabled until we have the ability to turn them on and off. Yes, we do realize how insane it was to be sending those out so frequently.

It would be nice if we could see who made the last post in the subject line somewhere.

Carlos Conceição

every director should be an available option as an auteur to add to your profile. also, some of my favorite films don’t have pages yet. users could probably help to create certain pages, even if they would have to be approved by the site’s managers.

bookwibble

Aw, I was starting to get used to the thumbs. Oh, well, it’s probably for the best. Now if that other blog I post at would get rid of them…

But a question that I have now is: how will cinephiles be chosen?

Daniel Kasman

Leah, your suggestion is making it into the next forum revision!

Bookwibble: we’ll let you know when we re-design our reputation system!

Jake Howell

Dude, I just got to no. 17 literally the day you turned off the Thumbs system. I demand an apology immediatly! ; )

No, but seriously, that’s probably a good idea to eliminete that system.
On one single post, I managed to get 18 THUMBS DOWN. Is that a record?

Bob Stutsman

Is it just me, or does the ‘edit’ feature only work now for a very short time? I really need this feature to last for more than a couple of minutes, as I am always realizing some mistake or typo too late. Please restore this so that it doesn’t forever condemn our obvious mistakes to live on in ‘post’ eternity.

Powerpuffgirl

I think you should make the films free to watch…given all the competition, I, along with a few friends that I discussed your site with, don’t want to pay to watch a film online. We can check out dvds for free at the library. There’s also Hulu, which offers feature films for free. I don’t mind watching a commercial at the beginning or end of the movie either (wouldn’t mind watching it in the middle but I’d prefer not to). Otherwise, I love your idea and the design.

Filmy

yes I agree with Bob on “edit” option
